The M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
Hello and welcome to the coverage of the fifth and final T20 International between India and the West Indies at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
With the West Indies matching the hosts’ firepower to level the series 2-2, the decider will test whether Shreyas Iyer’s men can overcome their shortcomings when the stakes are highest.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium, with its short boundaries and batting-friendly surface, promises another run feast. Yet its unfamiliar conditions could offer India an opportunity to reset their bowling combination.
Will Rain Play Spoilsport?
Rain could pose a threat in Bengaluru, which has witnessed a wet spell over the past few days, with more showers forecast for tonight.
However, the stadium's excellent drainage facilities offer reason for optimism, potentially limiting interruptions and ensuring a substantial amount of play even if the weather turns gloomy.
India Look for Improved Bowling Performance
Four high-scoring encounters have exposed cracks that the run glut has largely concealed.
The opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma has produced stands of 29, 42, 7 and 60. The last partnership, in Hyderabad, was heavily tilted towards Samson, who made 56 of the 60 runs, while Abhishek managed just two.
The middle order has offered little reassurance. Ishan Kishan began promisingly with 43 and 37 before falling for six, while Naman Dhir’s last three outings yielded 4, 10 and zero. Iyer, after a commanding 102 in the opener, has managed scores of 40, 1 and 16.
A defeat would also test Iyer’s credentials as captain, although his place is secure.
Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy’s inability to find a boundary for 18 balls in Hyderabad further underlined India’s struggle to cope when the required rate climbs.
Kuldeep Yadav could return to strengthen the middle overs, while veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar is available as cover for Arshdeep Singh, who injured his bowling shoulder in the previous match. A final call on Bhuvneshwar will depend on Arshdeep’s fitness.
Hope's Dream Run
India must also find a way to contain West Indies captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford, who have amassed 261 and 221 runs respectively. Kuldeep’s control and Bhuvneshwar’s familiarity with the venue could prove valuable.
The Caribbean side would relish a series triumph, but India carry the heavier burden of expectation.
Their challenge, however, may begin with the weather: persistent autumn rain threatens to disrupt the decider before either side can settle the contest.
Australia were the last visiting team to win a T20I series in India - a 2-0 sweep in February 2019. The Men in Blue have since gone unbeaten in 19 bilateral T20I series at home, winning 17 and drawing two.
