Hardik Pandya back to lead MI

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane has won the toss and has elected to field first.

Hardik Pandya, who missed Mumbai Indians' last three matches due a back spasm, is back to lead them against KKR.

"We are looking to bowl first. It is as simple as that. We want to focus on that, we have to win two out of two and we want to stay in the moment. In the first half of the tournament there were moments if we had capitalised,  things would have been different. It is frankly tough to read the wicket, we need to play good cricket throughout 40 overs. We are going with the same team," Rahane said after winning the toss.

Hardik said: "We would have bowled first as well. Looks like a track which has been under the covers. Just wanted to see how exactly it plays out. Every game you play, you want to win. You want to play your best cricket, put the best foot forward. At the same point of time, Mumbai Indians have a long history of winning titles. So just want to make sure that we keep the head high and make sure that we represent Mumbai Indians in the best capacity."

KKR seek win vs MI to keep slim playoff hopes alive

image
Hello and welcome to the coverage of the Indian Premier League 2026 match No. 65 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

KKR will fight to keep their playoff hopes alive when they take on already-eliminated Mumbai Indians in the must-win clash. With their campaign hanging by a thread, KKR cannot afford another slip-up as defeat would officially knock them out of the tournament for the second straight season under captain Ajinkya Rahane.

KKR have endured another inconsistent season after finishing eighth in 2025, just a year after winning the IPL title under Shreyas Iyer. Even if they beat MI, their qualification hopes will still depend on results elsewhere.

Punjab Kings' match against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday could decide KKR's fate. If Punjab win, KKR's final league match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday (May 24) will become meaningless. Punjab currently have 13 points, while Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals are all on 12 points. KKR are on 11 points with two matches remaining.

Among the teams still in contention for the final playoff spot, the Royals and KKR are the only sides with two games left. Rajasthan are in the strongest position, needing wins against Lucknow and Mumbai to reach 16 points and secure qualification.

KKR, however, face a tougher situation. They must win both their remaining matches and also hope Punjab lose to Lucknow, as Punjab can still qualify with 15 points and hold a much better net run-rate.

For Mumbai Indians, the focus will be on ending a disappointing campaign on a positive note and damaging KKR's playoff push. The five-time champions are likely to welcome back captain Hardik Pandya, who missed the last three matches because of injury but returned to full training on Monday.

Hardik has struggled this season, scoring only 146 runs in eight innings and taking four wickets at an expensive economy rate. Mumbai's campaign has also suffered because several senior Indian players have failed to deliver consistently.

Suryakumar Yadav has scored just 195 runs in 11 innings without a half-century, while Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma have also struggled for form. Jasprit Bumrah has led the bowling attack strongly but received little support from the rest of the pace unit.

Where to Watch: The match will be broadcast live on Star Sports from 7.30 pm IST, while JioHotstar will stream the match in multiple languages.
