Gill, Padikkal look to build after lunch

India 91-2 (27 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

India resume after lunch with Devdutt Padikkal and Shubman Gill looking to build on their steady partnership. Sri Lanka open with spin, bringing Prabath Jayasuriya into the attack with a slip in place.

Jayasuriya immediately troubles Padikkal with a slider that beats his defence, but the left-hander responds by getting well forward and seeing out a maiden over.

Keshara Nuwantha continues from the other end and Sri Lanka appeal loudly for LBW against Gill. The India captain is well forward and the impact appears to be outside off, so the appeal is turned down. Gill then works one through mid-wicket for a single.

Padikkal adds two more by stepping down the track and looking to go inside-out over cover, though he doesn't quite middle the shot.

Three runs come off the over as India move to 91/2 after 27 overs.

India 88-2 (25 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

India head into lunch at 88/2 after 25 overs on the opening day in Colombo.

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two wickets to fall, but Devdutt Padikkal and Shubman Gill have steadied the innings.

Sri Lanka will be pleased with the breakthroughs, though India have recovered well after a brisk start.

India 88-2 (25 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Lahiru Kumara returns for another spell and keeps Devdutt Padikkal quiet early in the over. Padikkal defends a couple before finding two runs towards fine leg, with a sharp stop preventing more. India move to 75/2 after 21 overs.

Prabath Jayasuriya continues and Shubman Gill nearly finds a gap, getting an inside edge past short leg for two. He then settles back into defence as Sri Lanka keep things tight. Two runs come off the over as India reach 77/2 after 22 overs.

Keshara Nuwantha comes back and Padikkal picks up a single through mid-off. Gill then produces another crisp boundary before adding a single, taking India to 83/2 after 23 overs.

Jayasuriya keeps Gill in check with a tidy over. The India captain is solid off the front foot, repeatedly meeting the ball cleanly as Sri Lanka bowl a maiden.

Nuwantha continues and Padikkal starts to open up. He cuts one towards point, leaves the next and then finds the boundary. A full toss follows, but Padikkal can only manage a single after Asitha makes a good stop to save three runs.

Five runs come off the over as India reach 88/2 after 25 overs.

Jaiswal-Fernando clash adds spice to Colombo Test

India 73-2 (20 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Shubman Gill walks in after Jaiswal's dismissal, with Prabath Jayasuriya back into the attack. Devdutt Padikkal gets India moving with a single through cover before Gill settles in with a couple of watchful defensive shots.

Asitha Fernando continues and keeps the pressure on. A delivery that stays a touch low strikes Padikkal on the pads, giving India a leg-bye. Gill remains cautious at the other end and, after facing 10 balls, is still waiting to get off the mark.

India add just one run to reach 68/2 after 19 overs.

Jayasuriya continues and Padikkal works one through mid-wicket for a single. Gill then patiently sees out a couple of deliveries before finally breaking the shackles.

The India captain opens his account in style, finding the boundary to get off the mark. Five runs come off the over as India reach 73/2 after 20 overs.

Jaiswal-Fernando clash adds spice to Colombo Test

image
A heated exchange between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando after the wicket has added some spice to the contest in Colombo.

Jaiswal's helmet and head also appeared to make contact during the moment, which is certainly not a good sign. It could well be one of the talking points from an eventful opening day.

Fernando strikes, Jaiswal falls for 45

image

India 66-2 (17 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Asitha Fernando returns and keeps things tight before Padikkal gets India moving with a single towards fine leg after being hurried by the pace. Jaiswal then picks up two down the leg side, with Niroshan Dickwella getting a glove to the ball but only managing to parry it away. A single off the final delivery takes India to 49/1 after 15 overs.

Keshara Nuwantha continues, but Jaiswal is starting to find his rhythm. He cuts a short delivery for a boundary to bring up India's 50, then adds another single through deep mid-off. Padikkal sees out the rest as India reach 54/1 after 16 overs.

Fernando comes back and Jaiswal continues to dominate. He finds the gap through the covers for a boundary, then produces another beautifully timed shot through the off side, moving to 45 off 52 balls.

But Fernando has the last laugh. The pacer beats Jaiswal's defence and knocks over his stumps, ending a promising innings. Jaiswal is visibly disappointed, while there is a brief exchange of words between the batter and bowler.

Twelve runs come off the over as India slip to 66/2 after 17 overs.

Two drops in 5 overs! Padikkal gets lucky

India 45-1 (14 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Keshara Nuwantha comes into the attack and India pick up just a single. Jaiswal works one down to long-off, while Padikkal remains watchful and defends the rest of the over.

Lahiru Kumara continues and Jaiswal clips one to deep square leg for a single. Padikkal then gets off the mark with a soft-handed shot towards mid-wicket. Jaiswal sees out the rest as India move to 40/1 after 13 overs.

Nuwantha continues, and Sri Lanka hand Padikkal another life. The left-hander goes for a cut to a slightly short delivery outside off and gets a thick edge, but the ball flies straight to the slip fielder, who fails to hold on. Padikkal manages to scamper through for a single.

That is Padikkal's second dropped chance in five overs -- a worrying sign for Sri Lanka, especially against India's in-form batter.

Jaiswal then finds the boundary before defending the final two deliveries.

Five runs come off the over as India reach 45/1 after 14 overs.

Lahiru strikes, Rahul falls for 18

image

India 37-1 (11 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Lahiru Kumara continues and KL Rahul starts the over with two runs, pulling a short delivery firmly in front of square after getting on top of the bounce.

Rahul then plays one towards backward point before Kumara strikes with the next ball. A short, wide delivery tempts Rahul into the cut, but he gets a top edge and Niroshan Dickwella takes a comfortable catch.

Rahul departs for 18 off 33 balls, ending the opening partnership.

Devdutt Padikkal walks out to join Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle, with India losing their first wicket.

The players then take the drinks break at the SSC.

Kumara gets one to tempt Devdutt Padikkal into a drive outside off, and the left-hander slices it towards backward point. Dinusha gets underneath it, but the ball appears to carry and he fails to hold on.

Kumara is furious, and the replays confirm the ball did carry. A costly drop for Sri Lanka, especially with Padikkal coming off a match-winning 167 in the first Test.

Jaiswal, Rahul shift gears after quiet start

India 31-0 (10 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Asitha Fernando switches to round the wicket to Yashasvi Jaiswal, but the left-hander is in no mood to take risks. He leaves the first delivery, defends the next few with a straight bat and then lets one swing past him. A maiden over for Fernando.

Prabath Jayasuriya is introduced into the attack, bringing spin into play for the first time. With a slip and short leg in place, KL Rahul gets India moving, working one towards mid-off and completing a quick single. Jaiswal sees out the rest of the over as India reach 19/0 after eight overs.

Lahiru Kumara returns and keeps things tight, with Rahul playing out another maiden over.

Jayasuriya continues, but this time India find their rhythm. Jaiswal gets a flighted delivery in his area and drills it through the leg side for a boundary. Rahul then steps down the track, gets to the pitch and launches one straight back over the bowler's head for a huge six.

He adds a single before defending the final delivery.

Twelve runs come off the over as India race to 31/0 after 10 overs.

KL Rahul survives LBW scare

image

India 18-0 (6 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Asitha Fernando continues and KL Rahul finally breaks the run of quiet overs with a superb boundary through cover. He waits patiently for one in his hitting arc, gets well forward and caresses it through the gap.

Fernando then gets one to straighten into Rahul, who falls over while attempting the flick and is struck on the pads. Sri Lanka make a loud LBW appeal and decide to review after the umpire says not out.

However, UltraEdge shows no bat involved and ball-tracking confirms the delivery was missing leg stump. Not out, and Sri Lanka lose a review. A dot ball finishes the over.

Four runs come off it as India move to 17/0 after five overs.

Lahiru Kumara continues and gets one to rise on Jaiswal, who defends it softly into the pitch. There is another loud LBW appeal, but the umpire remains unmoved and Sri Lanka decide against reviewing it.

Jaiswal then works one away to fine leg for a single, while Rahul sees out the rest of the over safely.

Just one run comes from it as India reach 18/0 after six overs.
10:21

India off to a good start in Colombo

India 13-0 (4 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Asitha Fernando continues and keeps KL Rahul quiet. Rahul leaves the first two deliveries before defending the third and letting the next one go. Fernando completes a maiden over.

Lahiru Kumara continues from the other end and Jaiswal is equally watchful, playing out a tidy over without scoring.

Two successive maiden overs for Sri Lanka as India remain 13/0 after four overs.

India off to a good start in Colombo

India 13-0 (2 Ovs) vs Sri Lanka | SCORECARD

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are off to a confident start as India move to 13/0 after two overs.

Asitha Fernando begins with a yorker, but Jaiswal wastes no time getting off the mark, driving it stylishly towards long-off for a boundary. The left-hander then plays out the next couple of deliveries before flicking one behind square for a single. Rahul finishes the over with a watchful defence.

Lahiru Kumara takes the ball from the other end and Jaiswal remains patient initially, defending one and leaving the next. But he soon shifts gears, finding the boundary twice in a row to finish the over in style.

Eight runs come off the second over as India make a brisk start in Colombo.

Saransh debuts; India opt to bat first

Shubman Gill confirmed that Kuldeep Yadav misses the Colombo Test due to an infection, paving the way for Saransh Jain to make his India debut.

The pitch is expected to offer plenty of runs, with some live grass providing the new-ball bowlers a little assistance early on. However, it is not a green top and should become a good surface for batting as the Test progresses.

With plenty of runs likely on offer, teams winning the toss are expected to bat first. Interestingly, the toss has not made much difference in Colombo, with teams batting first and second having both won 16 times.

India have won the toss and opted to bat first against Sri Lanka.

Saransh Jain makes his India debut, with Kuldeep Yadav left out. The off-spinner comes into the XI as India make one change for the second Test.

Saransh Jain has just received his Test cap from Ravindra Jadeja, which looks like a strong indication that Kuldeep Yadav will miss this Test.

India's big positives ahead of Colombo Test

image

India head into the second Test against Sri Lanka with confidence after a commanding win in Galle, but the victory also exposed a few areas that need fixing before the Colombo clash on Sunday.

The Indian bowlers were clinical, with Sri Lanka failing to cross 300 in either innings. Manav Suthar starred with a 10-wicket haul, including 6/55 in the second innings, while Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with crucial wickets.

The biggest positive, however, was India's improved batting against spin. Devdutt Padikkal's superb 167, along with KL Rahul's 82 and Dhruv Jurel's 51, powered India to 462 in the first innings. Rishabh Pant then smashed a quick 66 in the second innings, with Padikkal and Rahul again making valuable contributions.

But there are concerns. Yashasvi Jaiswal has managed only one fifty in his last eight Test innings, while captain Shubman Gill scored just 24 runs in Galle. Both will be keen to make an impact in Colombo.

Kuldeep Yadav's lack of impact is another talking point. He bowled just 25 overs across two innings and took one wicket. India could consider off-spinner Saransh Jain, especially with three left-handers in Sri Lanka's top seven.

India need a win in Colombo to strengthen their World Test Championship campaign, with tough series against New Zealand and Australia to follow.
