Devdutt Padikkal starred with a magnificent 167 before Sri Lanka's bowlers bounced back with late wickets on the rain-hit second Day of the first Test in Galle.

Padikkal's maiden Test century and Dhruv Jurel's solid fifty helped India finish the day on a strong 460/9 in 116 overs.

The start of play on the second day was delayed by more than four hours because of persistent rain in Galle.

Only 43 overs were possible on the second day, with India scoring 172 runs for seven wickets over the two sessions.

Jurel stroked a fluent half-century (51) before he perished soon after getting to the landmark.

Sri Lanka chipped away at the wickets with the second new ball as India slipped from 357/4 to 447/9, losing five wickets for 90 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja (13), Mohammed Siraj (11) and Manav Suthar (24) were dismissed in the final session.

Prabath Jayasuriya continued his good showing at Galle, taking 4/109, while debutant Keshara Nuwantha impressed with figures of 3/175.

Sri Lanka keep chipping away at the wickets. Suthar, who contributed with a handy knock of 24, comes down the track but holes out Jayasuriya straight into the hands of the fielder at long-on.

Jayasuriya picks up his fourth wicket of the innings to continue his superb record in Galle.

India's tailenders perishing in the search for quick runs.

Last man Prasidh Krishna gets off the mark with a single before Kuldeep reverse sweeps the spinner for two runs to bring up India's 450.

Kuldeep takes one before Prasidh stretches forward to keep out the last ball right under his eyes.

Fernando to bowl from the other end. The first ball is a short ball down the leg side as left-hander Kuldeep misses the pull.

However, he makes good connection pulling the pacer square on the leg sie for a four. Kuldeep picks one on the off-side before Prasidh is struck on the pads by the full delivery as he fails to get his bat down in time

Sri Lanka take the review but the ball is clearly missing the leg stump.

Jayasuriya to bowl the final over of the day. Kuldeep gets a leading edge second ball which goes over the bowler and falls safely.

The left-hander lofts the next ball powerfully over mid-off for a boundary and defends another flighted delivery back to the bowler.

Kuldeep misses the sweep and is struck on the body and the same last ball to end the second day's play.

Siraj out for 11; India lose 8th wicket

Mohammed Siraj chances his arm as he swings Keshara but gets it off the inside half for two runs to deep midwicket.

Siraj makes superb connection as Keshara gives it a bit of air, smashing it high over long-on for a huge six.

He hits the fourth ball on the bounce to long-off for a single and Suthar takes one off the next.

A single to Siraj off the last ball gives India 11 runs from the Keshara over.

In the next over, Siraj has a big swing against Jayasuriya but misses the slog and is struck on the back pad. But no chance of leg before as the ball was going down.

Siraj plays an orthodox next ball, showing a lot of respect to the spinner -- a beautiful straight drive gently driving the ball back to the bowler.

Pacer Asitha Fernando back into the attack but Suthar receiving some treatment.

Sri Lanka bring back the pacer after Siraj targetted off-spinner Keshara. Suthar slaps the first ball to deep point for one before Siraj misses the bouncer down the leg side.

The next ball is the same as Siraj again misses the pull shot off a bouncer down the leg side.

The move to bring back Fernando works as he gets the wicket of Siraj, who is deceived by the slower ball as he holes out to long-off for 11.

Jayasuriya back into the attack and he strikes first ball of his new spell. Jurel gets a leading edge looking to flick against the turn. This time de Silva takes a stunning one-handed catch diving full length to his right at slip.

Jurel walks back after a good hand of 51 from 68 balls as Sri Lanka finally have a chance to finish off India's lower order.

Mohammed Siraj, who played a quickfire cameo in the warm-up match ahead of the Tests, walks in at No 9.

That boundary from Jurel saw the ball land in a puddle making it completely wet. The Sri Lankans using the towels to dry up the ball.

Off-spinner Keshara comes back into the attack. Jurel clips the spinner fine off his pads for two runs to bring up his fifty from 67 balls.

A fluent knock from the right-hander which should seal his place in the Test team for the next few games.

He picks one before Suthar uses his feet to loft Keshara over mid-off for a four.

Keshara has been impressive on Day 2, bowling the right lengths which has brought him success. Another good over from the spinner as Jurel and Suthar pick a single each with the latter playing four dots in a row.

Some bonus runs for the Indians as wicketkeeper Dickwella fails to gather the ball and concede four byes after Jurel had offered no shot to a length ball from pacer Kumara.

Keshara gets a break after a marathon spell of 16 overs, making way for Jayasuriya.

Jurel pushes the first ball into the covers for a single and Suthar clips the next to fine leg for another run. Jurel watchfully keeps out the rest of the over.

Sri Lanka's bowlers not making much of an impact in recent overs with the ball losing its shine and going a bit soft.

Suthar and Jurel pick a single each off Kumara before the former clips the pacer for three runs through midwicket.

Kumara, who has struggled with his control, bowls a short ball down the leg side as Jurel easily despatches it through square leg for a four.

Kumara has given away 29 runs in his last three overs allowing India to release the pressure.

It looks like India will hit to score quickly and get around 450-475 before getting Sri Lanka into bat in the last 30 minutes.

There is definitely some urgency being witnessed by the two Indian batters.

Jurel, on 29, gets a lifeline as Dhananjaya de Silva puts down a sharp catch at slip after the right-hander had got the edge trying to cut Jayasuriya.

Sri Lanka captain de Silva was not in any position to take that catch, getting up too early. Infact, he seemed surprised when the ball flew towards and hit him on the body.

He picks one before Suthar gets the thick outside edge which flies between slip and gully for a boundary to bring up India's 400, in the 104th over.

The left-hander hung his bat away from the bat and edged the away going delivery which went in the gap for a four.

He picks a single before Jurel guides the last ball past the fielder at gully for the third four of the over as Kumara goes for 15 runs in his 11th over.

Kumara has been expensive conceding 66 runs in his 11 overs.

A single each to Jurel and Suthar, with the latter getting off the mark, as India reach 379/6 in 100 overs.

In the next over, Suthar chances his arm as he gives Keshara the charge but miscues the lofted shot over the off-side but away from mid-off for a couple of runs.

The left-hander is struck on the pads by the slider which goes straight on and hits him on the pads but the LBW shout is turned down. No review by Sri Lanka as the ball looks to be sliding down.

Suthar takes one down to long-off before Jurel uses his feet and swings Keshara over midwicket for a six.

Keshara continues his wicket ways, getting the wicket of Jadeja, who is given out leg before wicket for 13.

Jadeja takes the DRS. But it is all reds on the review as India end up losing the review with Jadeja making his way back to the dressing room.

Keshara picks his third wicket, as India slip to 377/6 in the 99th over.

Manav Suthar walks in at No 8 ahead of Kuldeep Yadav. He nearly gets the edge, beating on the outside edge off Keshara, who has looked superb with the second new ball.

Jadeja playing for the turn gets an inside edge for a single to fine leg and Jurel keeps strike with one to long-on from the last ball.

Spinners at both ends as Jayasuriya bowls from the other end. Jurel keeps out the first three balls before he takes a single on the leg side and Jadeja blocks the last two balls.

In the next over, Jurel clips Keshara off his pads for one and Jadeja rocks back to cut as he gets the thick outside edge for two runs to thirdman.

The spinner oversteps for a no-ball as Jadeja picks a single and Jurel blocks the last two balls.

India go into the tea break on 364/5 in 94 overs, with Jurel unbeaten on 19 and Jadeja on four.

India maintained a good run rate in the rain-hit second session despite the wickets, scoring 76 runs in 21 overs while losing three wickets.

Sri Lanka's spinners bowled much better today, with spinners Nuwantha and Jayasuriya both picking up two wickets each.

The second day's play resumed at 2.35pm IST after a delay of four and half hours due to rain with the entire morning session washed out.

Devdutt Padikkal was stumped off Prabath Jayasuriya after a superb innings of 167, while Rishabh Pant (39) and K L Rahul (82) were dismissed by Keshara Nuwantha.

Jayasuriya bags the key wicket of Padikkal, who runs down the track but is beaten all ends up and is stumped by wicketkeeper Dickwella.

Padikkal walks back after a splendid innings of 167 from 230 balls as Sri Lanka chip away at the wickets on Day 2.

Padikkal stepped out of the crease a bit too early and failed get to the pitch as the spinner outfoxed him with a quicker back of length delivery.

Padikkal gets on top of the bounce as he pulls Fernando for two runs to deep midwicket. The left-hander then cuts the pacer past point for a four followed by a single.

Fernando ends the over with a beauty, bowling in the right channel on and around the off-stump as Jurel looking to defend is beaten on the outside edge.

Jurel picking up the singles easily thereby taking the pressure off Padikkal, who takes one off the next.

Jurel then does well to steer Fernando past the gully fielder for a four to race to 13 from 11 balls as India go past 350 before he takes one off the last ball.

Padikkal plays a delightful flick off pacer Fernando through midwicket for a four to complete his 150 in grand style from 215 balls.

He has been integral in India doing well with the bat on the first two days.

Padikkal will look to continue batting in the same vein and get a double hundred which will certainly put India in the driver's seat despite so much time lost to rain.

Padikkal is the third Indian batter to score 150-plus against Sri Lanka at No 3 after Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara.

He is the fifth Indian batter to score 150 or more in a Test match in Sri Lanka.

Jurel looking to be busy picking up singles to keep the scoreboard ticking along.

Pacer Asitha Fernando from the other end. He starts with a beauty getting the length ball to move away to beat the well-set Padikkal on the outside edge as the left-hander went back to defend.

Padikkal guides the third ball to deep point for a single. Rahul caught in two minds, as he ends up playing away from the body but with soft hands as the ball goes along the ground between the slips and gully fielder for a four.

Spinner Nuwantha continues with the new ball. Padikkal pounces on a short ball slashing it past point for a four and then slaps the fourth ball to sweeper cover for a single.

The spinner strikes again with the new ball. It turns out to be a gift as Rahul ends up flicking the ball straight to Madushka at short leg.

Rahul walks back for 82 as India slip to 319/4 in the 85th over.

The debutant spinner getting Sri Lanka back into the contest with two quick wickets on the second day.

Dhruv Jurel gets off the mark with a single off the outside edge and Devdutt Padikkal goes back to cut and does well to get his bat down in time to the quicker ball.

He went 24 overs without a wicket but has struck picked up two wickets in his last three overs.

Spinner Nuwantha continues with the new ball. The move to give the spinner the new ball works for Sri Lanka.

Pant uses his feet and attempts to loft the spinner but can't get hold of the shot, which goes on the bounce to long-off stationed halfway down.

But Nuwantha gets his man a couple of balls later.

Pant charges down the pitch once again looking to loft but ends up miscuing it. Sonal Dinusha takes a superb catch running to his right at long-off to dismiss Pant for 39.

K L Rahul walks in at No 5 to resume his innings after he had retired hurt on Day 1.

Once again he will face up against the new ball and he does well to keep out the last two balls of the over.

Padikkal, resuming on 131, does the same as he blocks the first ball he faces before pushing the next into the off-side for a quick run.

A half-tracker from Jayasuriya as Pant rocks back to pull it in the gap at at midwicket for the first boundary of the day and keeps out the last ball.

The rain seems quite heavy forcing the groundstaff to rush back the covers.

This is turning out to be a frustrating day for the fans in Galle, who have waited patiently through the day.
