A New Low For India In Tests!

The 408-run defeat is India's biggest defeat in Tests in terms of runs. Their previous biggest margin of defeat was 342 runs against Australia in Nagpur in October 20024.

The last time India lost two Test series at home across two consecutive years was nearly four decades ago -- 3-0 against West Indies in 1983 followed by 2-1 series loss against England in 1984.

This is the first time that India have lost five matches within a span of seven games.

This is the first time in 25 years that India have lost five Tests in a two-season stretch. 

South Africa register their first series victory in India after a long wait of 25 years, having last triumphed here in 2000 under Hansie Cronje.

Temba Bavuma continues his amazing record as captain in Tests, winning 11 out of 12 Tests while one finished in a draw.

India's poor record under Gambhir

India's poor Test record under Gautam Gambhir continues, losing five out of their last seven Tests at home.

After Gambhir took over as head coach, India were clean swept at home for the first time in a three-Test series against New Zealand last year.

They lost Border Gavaskar Trophy for the first time after 2015 after losing the series in Australia earlier this year.

They have now lost a Test series at home against South Africa after 25 years.

Under him, India have won only two Test series against lower ranked opponents in Bangladesh and West Indies.

Maharaj strikes again a few balls later with the wicket of lastman Mohammed Siraj.

Siraj lofts the spinner straight down the ground but fails to time the loft as Marco Jansen takes a stunning catch running back from mid-on.

India fold for a lowly 140 in 63.5 overs in their second innings.

South Africa win by 408 runs to complete a 2-0 series whitewash -- their first series victory in India after 25 years.

Harmer takes 6; India lose 8th wicket

Jadeja swings Maharaj for a six over midwicket to complete his fifty from 78 balls, with four fours and two sixes.

He has been the sole Indian batter to offer some resistance with a half-century. Jadeja registers only the second half-century for India in the series.

But India are inching towards the humiliation of 2-0 series sweep. They have three wickets in hand with 45 overs remaining in the day.

In the next over, Nitish Kumar Reddy falls for a three-ball duck. He attempts the reverse sweep off Harmer but the ball turns sharply to hit the gloves and wicketkeeper completes an easy catch.

Jasprit Bumrah doesn't look keen on defending. He attempts a big swipe across the line off Harmer for a single to deep midwicket.

Sundar plays a cute paddle sweep, hitting Muthusamy fine on the leg side for a four.

In the next over, Jadeja smashes Harmer straight down the ground for a boundary before he takes a single.

Harmer gets the breakthrough with the wicket of Sundar. He gets the edge which goes quickly but Markram is quick to react and pouch the sharp chance.

Sundar walks back for 16 as India slip to 130/7 in the 61st over.

The brilliant Harmer completes his five-wicket haul as South Africa close in on victory.

Markram takes a world record ninth catch of the Test match -- the first person in the history of Test cricket to take nine catches in a match.

Harmer back into the attack as he replaces Jansen. Jadeja shows intent as he comes down the track to loft the spinner back over his head for a four.

He is beaten next ball as Harmer gets it to turn sharply and bounce to go past the outside edge before he keeps out the rest of the over.

Muthusamy continues as Sundar defends the first few balls. The fourth ball turns sharply and nearly goes into the stumps as Sundar looks to pad it away but it spins big into him and hits the back of his leg.

Sundar picks a single off the fifth ball before Jadeja sweeps it behind square for a four.

Both the left-hander looking quite solid. Sundar pushes Harmer into the off-side for a single before Jadeja is beaten on the outside edge and the two batters pick singles off the last two balls.

Jadeja solid in his defence as he plays out a maiden over from Muthusamy. In the next over, Sundar clips Jansen off his pads for a single and Jadeja again happy to block the rest of the over.

Sundar not shying away from playing his shots. He sweeps Muthusamy behind square on the leg side for a couple of runs, doing well to get a big stride out and convert it into a full toss.

He does well to get to the pitch and guide the spinner with soft hands past the slip fielder for one and Jadeja does the same last ball for another run.

In the next over, Jadeja pushes Jansen past point for one and Sundar keeps out the yorker before he leaves the next few balls followed by a block.

Pacer Marco Jansen back into the attack. Jadeja hits the third ball off his pads for a single before Washington Sundar plays an uppish flick over square leg for a four to get off the mark in style and bring up India's 100, in the 49th over.

Jadeja and Sundar had batted out more than sessions in the Manchester Test against England in July to help India escape with a draw.

India will need a similar rescue act from the duo to stage another miraculous escape.

Markram has equalled Ajinkya Rahane's record for the most catches by a fielder with both having taken eight catches.

Muthusamy giving the ball a lot of flight as Jadeja drives the second ball to long-on for one and Sundar does the same off the last ball as India struggle past 100, in the 50th over.

He starts with a full toss which Jadeja easily hits past mid-off for a boundary to continue his positive approach before he takes a single off the fourth ball.

Sudharsan's painful vigil finally ends. The left-hander gets the outside edge as he leans forward to defend to a full delivery and is caught by Markram at slip. 

Markram takes his eighth catch of the Test match as South Africa inch closer to a series sweep.

Jadeja is struck on the pads as he looks to defend against Harmer but the leg before shout is turned down and the Proteas decide against the review with the ball clearly going down.

Jadeja plays another solid sweep shot, hitting it through square leg for two runs and keeps strike with one off the last ball.

South Africa make a change as Markram replaces Maharaj. Jadeja sweeps the second ball for a single before Sudharsan continues to block as he keeps out the last four balls.

Jadeja brings out the sweep as he hits Harmer fine on the leg side for one and Sudharsan leaves a length ball which goes straight through and beats the keeper for two byes.

India are 90/5 in 47 overs at tea on Day 5, still needing another 459 runs for victory. 

They will need to bat out the next two sessions to draw the match but the pitch is aiding the spinners a lot and batting is quite tough.

Jadeja and Sudharsan have played out 94 balls adding 32 for the sixth wicket.

Jadeja has batted positively to score 23 from 40 balls, while Sudharsan has scored a patient 14 from 138 balls.

South Africa continue to mark towards victory, taking three wickets in 31 overs in the morning session.

Sudharsan misses out as he hits a full toss from Harmer, a rare loose ball, straight into the fielder at short leg before he keeps out the rest of the over.

Harmer has been excellent with his control, conceding 18 runs from his 16 overs while picking up four wickets.

Maharaj continues as Jadeja blocks the first three balls before he gets an inside edge for a single on the leg side and Sudharsan defends the last two balls.

Jadeja changes gears as he uses his feet to loft Maharaj wide of long-on for a six. Immediately South Africa push a fielder down to long-on.

Jadeja has overtaken Sudharsan, scoring 17 from 28 balls while the latter has battled hard for 14 from 125 balls.

Harmer gets the ball to turn and bounce to beat Sudharsan all ends up as he leans forward to defend.

The spinner then gets one to straight through with the arm as the left-hander is beaten again but is saved by the inside edge. If not for the edge, he looked plumb in front.

Sudharsan has played 102 balls now but is still struggling to read the spinners.

In the next over, Jadeja gets an inside edge off Maharaj past the fielder at short leg for a single on the leg side.

Sudharsan is struck on the gloves by a sharp rising delivery from Maharaj and seems to be in some pain as he calls for the physio.

The last ball also kicks off alarmingly going past Sudharsan's pads for a bye.

Sudharsan concentrating on his defence as he carefully plays out a maiden over from Harmer.

Ravindra Jadeja plays a confident sweep off Maharaj to deep square leg for a single. Sudharsan being very cautious, blocking everything bowled at him but he is not looking very comfortable out in the middle.

In the next over, Jadeja again brings out the sweep for a single against Harmer.

Sudharsan gets the edge trying to defend but it goes past the slip fielder for a four.

Sudharsan is looking to only defend and South Africa will do well to get more fielders around the bat for the left-hander.

In the next over, Jadeja takes a single off Maharaj before Sudharsan attempts the sweep but gets the top edge which falls safely for a single.

Jadeja plays a confident punch to long-on for another run as he keeps the scoreboard ticking along.

Harmer leaves India in further mess with the big wicket of Pant. The India captain leans forward to defend but only manages to slice a simple catch to Markram on the off-side.

Pant walks back for 13 as India slip to 58/5 in the 32nd over. That turned and bounced as Pant pushed forward to get the edge with Markram running to his left from slip to complete an easy catch.

Harmer spinning South Africa towards a memorable series victory in India, picking up 4/11 in the 12th over.

India suffering another batting collapse, losing their last three wickets for 18 runs.

Markram took his seventh catch of the Test match, the most by a South African fielder in a match.

This is turning out to be another embarrassing batting performance from India as they collapse against spin.

Harmer continues as Pant defends the first three balls before he uses his feet to a flighted delivery but can't get it past the fielder in the covers.

Pant clips the fifth ball on the leg side for a single before Sudharsan picks two runs off the last ball to fine leg.

Keshav Maharaj comes into the attack in place of Jansen. Pant smashes the third ball through the covers for a four to take India past 50.

Pant won't tone down his aggression as he uses his feet to launch the spinner down the ground for a six.

Sudharsan will have to stick to defending as he plays out a maiden over from Harmer.

India are 57/4 in 30 overs, still needing 492 runs for victory.

South Africa missed out on two early wickets but they have stormed right back courtesy of Harmer's double strike.

India battling for survival as they are reduced to 42/4 in 24 overs.

Jansen starts his new over with a short ball outside the off-stump as Sudharsan ignores before he defends the next two balls.

Jansen gets the length ball to move away late and beat the left-hander on the outside edge before he keeps out the last two balls.

It will be interesting to see Rishabh Pant's approach with the bat. Will he continue to bat in his normal aggressive fashion or will he bat to the situation?

Pant off the mark first ball as he clips Harmer on the leg side for one and Sudharsan gets the next off the outside half towards short third.

Sudharsan slaps the short ball to the fielder in the covers before he gets a single off the fifth.

Harmer makes the first breakthrough on Day 5. He ends Kuldeep's resistance, getting the arm ball to go straight through and bowl the left-hander for five.

The early wicket will be a big boost for South Africa on the fifth day, getting the nightwatchman out early.

Dhruv Jurel walks in at No 4 and he has his task cut out. He will have to cut down on his shot making and look to play with defence.

He clips the first ball he faces on the leg side for two runs to get off the mark and defends the next.

Harmer strikes again off the last ball of the over, as Jurel gets the edge and is caught at slip for two.

Luck going India's way again. This time Kuldeep (4) is the beneficiary as he gets the edge off Harmer, but Markram at slip puts down a simple catch.

Both batters have got lifelines early on Day 5 as South Africa rue their sloppiness on the field.

Sudharsan being very watchful, looking to just survive and play with caution as he plays out the over from Harmer.

India are 39/2 in 20 overs.

Jansen bowling back of length to Kuldeep on the stumps as the left-hander defends before he leaves the next followed by another block.

The pacer tries the bouncer which goes down the leg side but Kuldeep is able to duck under and he is beaten on the outside edge last ball.

In the next over, Sudharsan can't time the cut shot as he hits Harmer past point for a single. Kuldeep is then beaten trying to defend as the spinner gets some sharp turn and bounce and he slaps the last ball into the off-side.

Harmer giving lot of flight to left-hander Sudharsan, who has been very watchful. He keeps out the first four balls before he mishits the cut shot, but it falls just short of the fielder at point for a single.

Kuldeep again right to the pitch to keep out the flighted delivery from the off-spinner.

Jansen starts his new over with a short ball but outside the line of off-stump as Sudharsan is able to avoid it. The next is pitched up as Sudharsan blocks it.

Jansen strikes the early blow with the wicket of Sudharsan, who gets the edge and is caught behind for four.

As a disappointed Sudharsan is making his way back to the dressing room, the third umpire sounds out the loud blaring call for a no-ball as Jansen has overstepped.

A lifeline for Sudharsan on four and he can only thank his luck. He had survived a close shout for leg before wicket late on Day 4 and he has got another lifeline now. He needs to make most of this opportunity with his place in the Test team under threat.

The next ball is full but down the leg side as the left-hander is late on the glance with the ball going fine off the pads for four leg byes and keeps out the rest of the over.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 5 of the second and final Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati on Wednesday.

South Africa, who set India a mammoth victory target of 549 in the second Test, reduced the hosts to 27-2 to stay firmly on course for a 2-0 series sweep.

A first-innings lead of 288 had put the world Test champions in the box seat, and they declared their second innings on 260/5 immediately after Tristan Stubbs was dismissed for 94 midway through the final session.

India finished 522 behind and needing to bat out three sessions on Wednesday to eke out a draw.

Sai Sudharsan will resume on two with nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav on four.

Faced with a mountain to climb, India faltered early in their second innings.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) upper cut Marco Jansen for a spectacular six but fell caught behind in the fast bowler's next over trying to play another cut shot.

His opener partner K L Rahul made six before spinner Simon Harmer rearranged his stumps with a delivery that turned significantly.
