Chasing just 147 for victory, India's batting line-up surrendered tamely. Pant, who stroked 64, was the only Indian batter to score above the 20-run mark.
They were blanked 2-0 in a two-Test series at home by South Africa in 2000.

He looks to defend the next ball off the front foot but it turns sharply off the rough and goes off the pads to the slip fielder. New Zealand quite interested but the umpire is unmoved before they take the DRS.
A clear gap between bat and ball and there is nothing on the UltraEdge as the Kiwis lose their review.
That was a good delivery, flight and turning into Pant, who was dragged forward to defend.
Pant superb with his placement as he sweeps the spinner with the turn in the gap at deep square leg for another four.
He steps out and is forced to defend as the ball bounces sharply and turns. The Kiwis take the review yet again for a catch off the gloves. They have take a big gamble as this is their third and final review.

Rishabh Pant's counter-attacking knock has kept India afloat after a shocking top order collapse on Day 3 of the third and final Test.
Pant stroked an unbeaten 53 from 50 balls to rally India to 92/6 in 20 overs. They still need another 55 runs for victory.
Once again, the Indian top order caved in against the New Zealand spinners with Ajaz Patel taking 4/43.
Rohit Sharma perished to a reckless shot, attempting the pull shot to be caught at mid-on off Matt Henry for 11.
Shubman Gill was bowled by Ajaz for 1 after he offered no shot and Kohli also fell for the same score after he was caught at slip off the same spinner.
Jaiswal was trapped leg before wicket by Glenn Phillips for five while Sarfaraz Khan miscued the sweep off a full toss to be caught at deep square leg for one as India slipped to 29/5 in the eighth over.
Pant revived the Indians as he put on 42 runs for the sixth wicket with Jadeja, who made six from 22 balls.
Pant got the mark with a straight six off Ajaz to make his intent clear. He slammed Phillips for back to back fours in the ninth over to bring back India.
Pant used the sweeps to good effect while also quick in picking the length whenever the spinners dropped short.
He hit Ajaz for two boundaries in a row to race to his fifty from 48 balls in the last over of the session.
India will hope Pant can see them through to victory but he needs good support from Sundar and if Ashwin comes out to bat next.

Sundar, on 3, gets a lifeline as he heaves Ajaz over midwicket. He hasn't timed the ball well as it goes high towards midwicket as Devon Conway rushes to his right and gets a hand to the ball but can't hold on.
He slices the next ball but it falls safely to get him a single.
Pant picks up the length early to rock back and pull Ajaz's short ball through midwicket for a four.
He pulls the next ball square on the leg side to bring up his fifty from 48 balls, having hit seven fours and a six.
What a sensational knock under pressure from Pant. He seems to be batting on a completely different pitch and has been finding the boundaries quite reguarly.
While the other batters have fallen trying rash shots, Pant's shot selection has been impeccable.

There is a huge appeal for leg before wicket off the last ball. Pant is beaten on the inside edge as the ball goes off the pads to slip but there is no edge and the ball is going down the leg side.

Slightly short from Ajaz as Pant has enough time to rock back and pull it square on the leg side for a four before taking a single.
Ajaz continues his wicket ways as makes the breakthrough. Jadeja inside edges the whip as it goes off his pads and Will Young takes a superb catch diving to his right at short leg.
Jadeja held one end up, scoring six runs during his 42-run stand for the sixth wicket with Pant to bring India back.

That was a beauty from Ajaz as Kohli couldn't do much to end a nightmare series for the India right-hander.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 3 of the third and final Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai on Sunday.
India will be looking to push towards a morale-boosting win after spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin helped them take the upper hand on Day 2.
On a pitch offering a lot of assistance to the spinners, Jadeja took 4/52, while Ashwin returned to form with figures of 3/63 to reduce New Zealand to 171/9 in 43.3 overs.
The visitors lead by 143 runs with just one wicket in hand.
Will Young was the lone Kiwi batter to offer some resistance as he made 51, while no other batter got above the 30-run mark.
New Zealand were 93/3 at one stage before Jadeja and Ashwin did the damage as the Kiwis lost six wickets for 78 runs.
India will be looking to claim the last wicket quickly and finish off New Zealand's second innings and then chase down the runs to avoid a series whitewash at home.
