Mitchell Starc took three wickets to give Australia the upperhand in the morning session on Day 1 of the second Test against India in Adelaide on Friday.
Starc took 3/31 in eight overs, while Scott Boland claimed 1/24 to leave India reeling on 82/4 in 23 overs at the lunch break on the opening day.
Starc started the match in great style, getting Jaiswal leg before wicket folr a duck off the first ball of the match.
Gill stroked a fluent 31 and Rahul made a patient 37 as the duo put on 69 from 113 balls for the second wicket to get India back on track.
However, Starc turned things around in his second spell. He had Rahul caught at gully before he got the key wicket of Kohli in his next over, caught in the slips for seven.
Boland continued Australia's fine showing with the ball, getting Gill leg before wicket as India slipped to 81/4.
Earlier, India, bolstered by the return of skipper Rohit Sharma and Gill, won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night second Test at the Adelaide Oval.
Rohit missed India's comprehensive victory in the series opener in Perth to care for his newborn baby in Mumbai, while top order batter Gill sat out with a thumb injury.
India also brought in veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, while leaving out Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal.
