Chennai Super Kings register their first win of IPL 2023 with a 12-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants in Chennai on Monday.
Chasing 218 for victory, Mayers and Rahul gave LSG a rollicking start before Moeen Ali took out Mayers in the 6th over. Lucknow were sitting pretty at 80 for 1 after the Powerplay overs.
But once Moeen got into the act -- he also got good help from Santner who also picked a wicket and kept it tight -- LSG lost wickets quickly.
Pooran played a good hand of 32 off 18 to provide Lucknow some hope but once Deshpande had him caught in the deep, it was all downhill from there on end.
Earlier, the opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway shared a scintillating century stand to power Chennai Super Kings to 217 for seven.
After the initial blitz by Gaikwad (57 off 37 balls; 3 fours, 4 sixes) and Devon Conway (47 off 29 balls; 5 fours, 2 sixes), there were valuable contributions from Shivam Dube (27 off 16 balls; 1 four, 3 sixes) and Moeen Ali (19).
Wood is the new man in and after a dot, Wood gets off the mark with a four over the off side.
Wood hits a six off the last ball of the innings. LSG fall short by 12 runs.
28 needed off the final over as Deshpande bowls the crucial over.
Signs of nervousness as he starts with a wide and then he oversteps.
Free-hit ball and Badoni gets a couple to mid-wicket.
A dot later, Badoni is beaten by the slower ball as he tries to go big, miscues and is caught by Dhoni. He is out for 23 off 18.
Hangargekar back in the attack. Badoni starts the over with a single.
A wide later, Hangargekar bowls full and wide and Gowtham is beaten.
He bowls another wide next and a dot and follows that with another wide.
Gowtham only gets a single next ball as a fielder puts in a brilliant stop at the third man boundary.
Badoni then takes a couple to long-off before ending the over with two as 9 come off it.
That over from Chahar has brought the equation down drastically and 44 off 18 looks very gettable.
Deshpande continues and he keeps it tight and Badoni and Gowtham can only manage seven runs in the over.
Chahar back in the attack as K Gowtham walks in to bat.
Badoni and Gowtham start with three runs off the first two balls.
Chahar is then poor with three wides before Gowtham clobbers the bowler for a six!
Gowtham then takes 3 twos and gets a lifeline as 18 come off the over.
