Cricket updates: Dhawan hits century but India lose first Test

Another low for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has now lost 11 Tests away from home, the most by any Indian captain, says Mohandas Menon.

This was New Zealand's 10th Test victory against India making them the third team against whom New Zealand have reached double figures in terms of matches won.

India's poor record away from home continues. They have lost 10 and drawn one out in their last 11 matches played away from home.

India made a brave effort with the bat in the second innings and looked to be on course for victory at one stage. Kohli (67) and Dhawan (115) put on 128 runs for the third wicket but Wagner's double strike turned things around as India lost their way.

Ravindra Jadeja (26) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (39) looked to counter-attack but it was Wagner again who struck towards the end to thwart the Indians.

Wagner emerged as the best bowler for the Kiwis, claiming four wickets in both innings for a match haul of eight wickets for 126 runs.

Dhoni is unable to find the gap from the first four deliveries before he lofts the fifth ball from Wagner over the covers for a boundary. Wagner tries a slower bouncer which Dhoni looks to pull but drags it back on to his stumps. The Indian captain is bowled for a brisk 39 from 41 balls but interestingly replays show that Wagner might have cut the side crease with his front foot and should have been called a no-ball. But India don't have the option of DRS having turned it down themselves!

Ishant Sharma decides to take matters in his own hands as he smashes Boult through the off-side for a four. He looks to pull the next ball but gets a thick outside edge and is caught by Watling for four.

India are bowled out for 366 in 96.3 overs to lose by 40 runs as NZ take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Dhoni smashes Boult powerfully down the ground beating the fielder at long-off for a boundary. He pulls the third ball but it goes to long-on and he is not interested in the run.

Boult switches to round the wicket and Dhoni is hit on the helmet by a quick bouncer as he took his eyes off and it went behind the keeper for four leg byes. He takes a risky single from the last ball but the substitute fielder at square leg misses the direct hit with Ishant well out of his crease.

India need 49 runs with two wickets in hand and still 20 overs to go in the day.

Finally, Dhoni decides to turn down the single as he sends back Zaheer. He flicks the next ball uppishly but it goes on the bounce to deep square leg and they take the single this time. Zaheer steers the fourth ball to thirdman before Dhoni survives a close shout for LBW as he shuffled across and tried to play it on the leg side.

Neil Wagner comes in to replace Southee and he claims the wicket of Zaheer, who is caught at first slip for 17. Bowling from round the wicket, Wagner got one to come with the arm before moving away late and Zaheer could only edge it as Taylor completed a good catch.

Ishant plays a nice drive off the first delivery through the covers but Dhoni turns down the single.

Dhoni showing great trust in Zaheer as he again takes a single from the first ball to midwicket. Zaheer then cuts a short ball over the point region for a six before hitting the next ball to deep point for one to keep strike.

Zaheer playing sensibly as he offers no shot to the first three deliveries from Boult. The left-armer then bowls a quick bouncer which Zaheer fends and then blocks the last ball of the over.

Dhoni again picks a single from the first ball before Zaheer lofts it over the cover region for a couple. It looks like Zaheer has been handed the task of going after the bowlers while Dhoni holds one end up. Southee bowls a low full toss which Zaheer flicks through midwicket for two more runs.

What strategy will Dhoni adopt now with the tailenders for company? He takes a single from the first ball before Southee bowls a quick bouncer to Zaheer who fends it using his gloves.

But Zaheer makes room and blasts the next short delivery over point region for a boundary to get off the mark.

In the next over, Dhoni takes a single off the second ball on the off-side. Boult then tries a bouncer to Zaheer who ducks under it before he is beaten by the next ball as he pokes at a wide outswinger.

Jadeja looks to heave Southee on the leg side but misses as the ball goes over the keeper for four byes. He then charges Southee and hammers him down the ground for another boundary before getting a couple of leg byes.

India get 12 runs from that over to continue their assault on the NZ bowlers.

Jadeja is on fire as he hammers Boult back over his head for a huge six to raise the quickfire 50-run stand with Dhoni for the seventh wicket.

But the pacers gets his revenge as Jadeja tries another loft down the ground but holes out to Sodhi at mid-on. Jadeja blasted 26 from 21 balls, putting on 54 runs from 34 balls for the seventh wicket as the Indians counter-attacked the Kiwi bowlers with some big hits.

India 303-6 (85 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Dhoni looking to attack the Kiwi bowlers as he smashes a full delivery from Boult past mid-off for a four. Three balls later he crashes a short wide delivery through point region for another boundary as the Indian captain looks to take charge.

Jadeja joins the fun as he lofts Southee back over his head for a four before Dhoni punches the same bowler through mid-off for another boundary.

Southee strikes with the first ball after the tea break as Rohit edges it behind to keeper Watling after scoring 19. A superb outswinger from the NZ pacer as Rohit pokes his bat at it and gives his wicket away to leave India in some trouble.

Ravindra Jadeja is off the mark in smashing fashion as he drives the first ball he faced down the ground for a four. He is struck on the pads off the next ball but the umpire turns down the appeal with a possibility of inside edge.

TEA - DAY 4

India 270-5 (81 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Rahane has been quite positive since his arrival to the crease and has kept the scoreboard moving at a good rate. He nudges a leg side delivery from Sodhi fine for a boundary before taking one to race to 18 from 20 balls.

India are 268 for four in 80 overs before New Zealand waste no time in taking the second new ball.

Trent Boult strikes with the very first delivery of the new ball getting Rahane leg before wicket for 18. That was a poor decision by umpire Steve Davies as Hot Spot shows that Rahane had got an inside edge on it, while also being hit high on the pads.

Captain Dhoni has his task cut out with India still needing another 139 runs for victory with five wickets in hand. He gets off the mark with a couple punching it to the covers.

At tea on Day 4, India are 270 for five in 81 overs with Rohit on 19 and Dhoni on two.

India lost three wickets for 90 runs in 27 overs in the post lunch session as New Zealand make a good comeback after the big partnership from Kohli (67) and Dhawan (115).

India 262-4 (78 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Sodhi comes into the attack and he has a loud appeal for LBW turned down as Dhawan played forward and get some inside edge on it.

Dhawan then rocked back and made some room to cut Sodhi behind point for a couple. He repeats the shot off the next ball but the man has been pushed back for only a single.

Wagner gets the big wicket of Dhawan, who is done in by the short ball and is caught behind for 115, having hit 12 fours and a six in his 211-ball knock. The bouncer caught him by surprise as he looked to sway out of the way but it hit his gloves on the way to the keeper.

Wagner, who into his eighth over in his latest spell, has turned things around for NZ claiming the wickets of both Kohli and Dhawan.

New batsman Ajinkya Rahane gets an edge which goes wide of the slips for a four before he takes one on the off-side.

Sodhi will continue as New Zealand look to run through their overs and get to the new ball quickly. Rahane takes a single from the first ball and Rohit does the same three balls later to get two runs from the over.

The dangerous Wagner is dealt cautiously by Rohit before his partner Rahane cuts a short ball from Sodhi for his first boundary as seven runs come from that over.

India 245-3 (73 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

A slight misunderstanding between Rohit and Dhawan as the left-hander comes down for a quick single but is sent back. Rohit then looks to loft Wagner over the off-side but miscues it down the ground for a couple. But he gets the next delivery off the middle pulling it confidently square on the leg side for a boundary.

India are 245 for three in 73 overs with 162 more needed for victory.

Dhawan is batting on 112 but is keen to stay in the middle for as long as possible while Rohit is on 17.

Rohit breaks the shackles as he cuts a short ball from Wagner over the slip region for a boundary before he defends the rest of the over.

In the left-armer's next over, Rohit beaten by the outswinger from Wagner but he has overstepped and it is called a no-ball.

India have gone into a shell since Virat's dismissal with 13 runs coming from 10 overs since then.

Dhawan takes a single from Wagner's first delivery before Rohit plays a loose shot outside the off-stump and is beaten. The right-hander then exchanges a few words with the pacer and it will be important he keeps his focus and not let this affect his concentration. He drives the last ball through the covers for a couple.

Dhawan has gone quiet following the dismissal of Kohli and is content to play the waiting game by cutting out the risks.

But the left-hander plays a loose shot outside the off-stump flirting with a wide delivery but is beaten.

Rohit gets a superb delivery from Southee as the outswinger beats him completely and he is lucky not have edged it.

The runs have dried up since Kohli's wicket as New Zealand look to build up the pressure with some tight bowling.

Southee and Wagner bowl a maiden over in succession before Rohit and Dhawan take a single each from the former's 17th over.

Meanwhile, Chris Cairns, one of New Zealand's greatest all-rounders who retired in 2006, said the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) had confirmed to him that he is under investigation for match-fixing.

"We are now in to the 10th week since, like you, I heard via the media that my name was linked to an ICC investigation into match fixing. Having already been to such extreme lengths -- right to the High Court in London -- to resolutely clear my name, it seemed inconceivable that I would be back here again.

Since then, my life has effectively been put on hold, and yet I remain totally in the dark about what I am being investigated for, what the basis for this investigation is, and I have still not even been questioned by the ICC. I have heard there are English Police in New Zealand this week investigating the matter, but no one has contacted me, despite some people saying otherwise."

Sodhi has gone for 61 runs in his 11 overs piling further pressure on New Zealand captain McCullum, who is desperate to make a breakthrough in the next few overs.

Kohli pulls a short ball from Southee and gets it fine on the leg side for a boundary before taking one from the fifth delivery.

Kohli and Dhawan are looking completely in control having put on 121 runs from 181 balls for the third wicket so far.

India are sitting pretty on 218 for two in 60 overs with 190 more runs needed for victory and eight wickets still in hand.

Left-arm pacer Wagner comes back to replace Sodhi. He is welcomed to the crease with a boundary as Kohli plays his trademark drive through the covers to take his score to 67.

But the bowler gets his revenge with the wicket of Kohli, who looks to pull a short ball but gets the bottom edge and is caught behind for 67, having hit 12 fours in his 102-ball knock.

Kohli and Dhawan put on 126 runs for the third wicket to give India hopes of pulling off the record run chase.

India 209-2 (59 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

India milking Sodhi with ease as they take four easy singles with the leg-spinner going for 47 runs in his 10 overs so far.

Southee nearly picks up the key wicket of Kohli, who goes after a wide delivery but is beaten all ends up with the ball moving away a touch.

Sodhi continues to disappoint as he bowls a poor delivery down the leg sid which the keeper can't get to and it goes for four byes to bring up the 100-run partnership from 175 balls for the second wicket.

Dhawan gives Sodhi the charge and lofts him over mid-on for a six to move to 99 and starts celebrating his century. But Kohli points out the scoreboard to his partner and he quickly stops his celebrations.

But he gets the landmark off the next delivery, crashing a short delivery through the covers for a boundary to bring up his century from 169 balls.

The last ball again slips down the leg side as Dhawan sweeps it fine for another four to make it 18 runs from the over.

Sodhi to resume proceedings after the lunch break. He starts with one down the leg side to Kohli for a single and Dhawan nudges the next ball fine for a couple before he takes one from the fifth ball for one.

Southee, the only wicket taker of the day, is in action after the break as New Zealand look to break this partnership. Dhawan steers the third ball nicely in the gap between the slips and gully for a boundary to take his score to 88.

LUNCH - DAY 4

India 180-2 (54 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

India looking comfortable on 180 for two at the lunch break on Day 4 with 227 runs required for victory and eight wickets still in hand.

The visitors lost the wicket of Pujara (23) in the morning session but managed to make good progress, scoring 93 runs in 29 overs before the lunch break.

Dhawan played sensibly to hit a solid 81 from 152 balls, while Kohli was at his fluent to score 55 from 82 balls. The two youngsters have put on 84 runs from 148 balls for the third wicket to put India on top as they attempt a record run chase.

LUNCH - DAY 4

India 180-2 (54 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Dhawan, who has been patient for a while, cuts a short ball from Anderson over the point fielder for a boundary. In the left-arm pacer's next over he hits a low full toss down the ground for another four as India continue their good progress.

Part-timer Kane Williamson comes into the attack as he goes for two runs which enables Sodhi to change ends.

India looking to be positive against the leg-spinner as they collect four easy singles in that over.

Kohli completes his half-century in some style from 80 balls as he drives a wide half volley from Williamson through the covers for a boundary. That is Kohli's ninth Test fifty and has come at a very important time for India as they attempt a record run chase against the Kiwis.

Dhawan ends the session with a thumping boundary off Williamson, cutting a short wide delivery through the off-side.

India 150-2 (48 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Corey Anderson comes into the attack as Kohli is able to release some pressure by flicking the fourth ball through fine leg for a boundary.

New Zealand introduce spin in the form of leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who starts with maiden over to Kohli. But in his next over, Kohli is quick to despatch a short ball over midwicket for a boundary. The next ball is a full toss and Kohli helps himself for another four through the covers to take his score to 35.  He takes two runs from the fifth ball to raise the 50-run stand for the third wicket from 111 balls as India continue their good progress.

Kohli continues his punishment on Sodhi as he crashes the last ball through the covers to take India past the 150-run mark.

India are 150 for two in 48 overs with Dhawan on 66 (134b) and Kohli on 41 (64). They require 257 more runs for victory.

India 129-2 (43 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

A break for Southee after a long probing spell of Day 4 during which he made the lone breakthrough. Boult comes back and he bowls a tidy over with Kohli taking a single from the last ball for the only run of the over.

Kohli takes a risk as he plays the cover drive despite New Zealand having two fielders at short cover. But he is able to find the gap to perfection for a boundary off Wagner who can't believe as to how the ball went through.

India 121-2 (39 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Southee continues as he comes on to bowl his sixth over on the trot on Day 4 and comes up with another tidy over, the third maiden in succession. Wagner is also keeping the pressure up from his end as he forces Dhawan to defend another over.

A brief discussion between Southee and his captain Brendon McCullum who decides to continue with his experienced pacer. Kohli turns the first ball on the leg side before crashing the next through the covers for a boundary to break the shackles.

In the next over, Kohli pulls a short ball from Wagner behind square on the leg side for a four as Southee misfields on the boundary;

After the first hour, India have reached 121 for two in 39 overs still needing 286 runs for victory. Dhawan has looked solid on 16 from 110 balls, while Kohli has got off to a good start on 17 from 34 balls.

India 106-2 (35 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Kohli leaves the first ball of Southee's new over alone but it comes in slightly and passes close to the stumps. Three balls later he bowls a quick bouncer which Kohli ducks under and it bounces over the keeper for four leg byes. The right-hander is struck on the pads by an incoming delivery but the huge appeal for LBW is turned down. Hawkeye confirms the ball would have gone over the stumps as Kohli survives a close call.

Successive maiden overs from Wagner and Southee before Dhawan drives  a full delivery from the former past mid-on for a boundary.

India 98-2 (30 ovs) vs NZ 503 & 105 [Target: 407]

Southee gets the first wicket of the day with the key scalp of Pujara, who is done in by the outswinger and is caught behind for 23. The right-hander had to play at it, leaving him just enough after pitching to take a faint edge through to the keeper.

Virat Kohli gets off the mark with a single on the off-side but gets another run courtesy of the overthrow.

A huge appeal for LBW against Dhawan by Boult but the umpire is not interested as the ball looks to be heading down the leg side. He takes a single from the third ball before Pujara blocks the rest of the over.

Dhawan keen to keep the scoreboard with regular singles as he hits Southee on the off-side and takes a quick run.

Dhawan nudges Boult fine on the leg side for a couple before he flicks the fourth ball through midwicket for three runs. Pujara gets his first run with a single to the fine leg region from the last ball to retain strike.

Pacer Tim Southee to open proceedings on Day 4 for New Zealand. Dhawan completes his half-century in the first over of the day with a risky single to mid-off. The left-hander tapped it to Rutherford and set for a quick run before being forced to dive at the end as he raised his first fifty in Tests, from 75 balls.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 4 of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Auckland, on Sunday. India will resume on 87 for one in 25 overs, still needing 320 for victory after the Kiwis set them a challenging target of 407.

Shikhar Dhawan got back among the runs to hit a fluent 49 from 70 balls, while Cheteshwar Pujara looked solid to score 22 from 59 balls with the duo putting on 51 runs for the second wicket till stumps on the third day.
