Statistical highlights: India vs South Africa, 1st Test, Day 1

Following are the statistical highlights of day one of the first Test between India and South Africa in Chennai on Wednesday.

# Graeme Smith (73) produced his third successive fifty-plus innings. In his previous two innings against Bangladesh in the 2007-08 series, he had recorded 62 at Dhaka and 232 at Chittagong.

# Smith's fifth half-century against India is his 21st fifty in Tests.

# Smith recorded his highest innings in India, bettering his 71 in his previous innings in the 2004-05 Calcutta Test. His knock is also the highest by a South African captain in India.

# Interestinglhy, Smith has now recorded four successive fifties against India. In the 2006-07 Test series in South Africa, he had made 58 at Durban and 94 & 55 at Cape Town.

# Hashim Amla (85 not out) registered his highest score against India -  his second fifty against India - his seventh in Test cricket. His previous highest innings against India was 63 in the 2006-07 Cape Town Test.
