Fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini shared six wickets to earn the advantage for South Africa on the first day of the second Test against West Indies on Wednesday.

West Indies, who won the toss and chose to bat despite cloudy overhead conditions, were 240 for eight at stumps.

Steyn took 4-60 and Ntini claimed 2-63 to undo much of what Marlon Samuels and Shivnarine Chanderpaul accomplished in a stand of 106 after West Indies had slumped to 77 for 3 before lunch.

Samuels scored 51, and Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 64 at the close. West Indies won the first Test by 128 runs in Port Elizabeth.
