Shashank Manohar has been confirmed president-elect of the Board of Control for Cricket India. He will take over from Sharad Pawar next year.
A statement from the BCCI on Thursday evening said Manohar, who is a vice-president of the Board, was the only nomination for the post, election for which was to be held at the 79th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Friday.
Manohar was the lone nominee from Central Zone, whose turn it is to head the BCCI, when the deadline for submission of nominations for the post of 29th president of the BCCI ended at 1700 IST on Thursday.
Pawar is due to quit the post in June ahead of the BCCI's next AGM in September 2008 because of his nomination as president-elect of the International Cricket Council.
Manohar, who represents Vidarbha Cricket Association, is a leading lawyer from Nagpur. A very influential man in the BCCI, he is close to Pawar.
The term of the 29th president will be for two years followed by another one-year term if he is elected again at the the end of the fixed term.
The BCCI had introduced the new concept of president-elect through a special annual general meeting resolution earlier this year and the proposal was passed unanimously.
A major item on the agenda of the AGM is the nomination of a new chairman for the Bangalore-based National Cricket Academy, in place of Ajay Shirke, who was appointed as interim head when the Board sacked Kapil Dev after the former India captain joined the rebel Indian Cricket League.
