India's tour of England -- an assessment

September 11, 2007

Talking about Indian bowlers, only Zaheer and to some extent RP Singh were impressive in the Test series. The rest of the speedsters disappointed and allowed the England batsmen to make the most of the stingless Indian attack at Lord's and The Oval. As for spinners, even Anil Kumble was only moderately successful. He was not as destructive as BS Chandrasekhar in England in 1971 or Maninder Singh in 1986.

As usual, India's field work, especially catching, left a lot to be desired despite the presence of a specialist fielding coach in Robin Singh. And our players carried their poor fielding into the one-day series as well.

More than the batsmen, it was the bowlers who disappointed in the one-day series, which we came agonizingly close to winning after the sixth ODI.

It remains an unsolved mystery of Indian cricket why Ajit Agarkar gets regularly selected in the one-day side at the cost of better bowlers in the country. India has lost many ODIs simply because of Agarkar's poor, lacklustre bowling. Agarkar's presence has had a demoralizing, rather than morale-boosting, effect on Team India.
