The 21-year-old Uthappa struck 11 fours and two sixes to give the hosts a blazing start after being asked to bat first.
Uthappa, back in the team after eight months, dominated an 88-run second wicket stand off just 52 balls with Suresh Raina (23) until he mistimed a shot against Chris Gayle to Lendl Simmons.
