Wicketkeeper-turned-batsman Dinesh Karthick lifted India from the dead with a patient knock of 63.
India, 90 for seven at one stage, were staring down the barrell before Karthick and Ajit Agarkar came to the rescue with an eighth wicket partnership of 62 runs.
Agarkar rallied the Indian tail after Karthick's dismissal to push India to a toal of 189 in 48.2 overs.
