On a warm and sunny day, the Indian batsmen relished the conditions on a good batting wicket after captain Dravid won the toss and chose to bat first.
Tendulkar started steadily, but after a few quiet overs launched an assault on the England bowling to give India a rollicking start.
It was the 18th time that Tendulkar and Ganguly had put on a hundred-run partnership for the opening wicket. Overall, it was their 23rd century partnership.
