English media unamused by jellybean joke

August 1, 2007

And finally, Patrick Kidd on the Times blog finds himself in the middle of a bit of a ruckus, thanks to his suggestion earlier that effigies of Simon Taufel were being burnt in Mumbai and Kolkatta after the two shockers against Tendulkar and Ganguly. The comment was racial stereotyping, feel some; not half it wasn't, says Kidd.

And finally, the comments below Pat Gibson's post on the Times on the jellybean affair:

I follow and play cricket as much for its sporting action as for the ethos it is meant to epitomise...what is happening in this match is the latest example of the shameful erosion of the latter.

Where do Vaughan, Prior, Pieterson, Collingwood and the rest feel they get the right to sour cricket with their unapologetic use of sledging and poor sportsmanship? It is a sign of their inability to understand the wider context of the game and their responsibilities within it and it is a confirmation that they are too talentless to earn success through legitimate means.

I am ashamed of many of this current team and it is a sad indictment that I'm starting to think of them in the same way as our diving, snarling, spitting national football side.

The class, quiet dignity and loud talent of the Indian side is a joy to watch and I'd pay a thousand times more to watch the sublime skills of Kumble or Dravid rather than the tedious and shameful yobbism of Prior.
