Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar added valuable 40 runs for the last wicket to take England closer to Australia's first innings total.
Harmison made 23 before holing out to Lee off Clark, leaving Panesar unbeaten on 16.
England were bowled out for 215 in their first innings in reply to Australia's total of 244.
