Delhi - UP in drab draw

The Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and defending champions Uttar Pradesh ended in a drab draw after no play was possible due to bad weather on the final day of the Elite Group A clash in Delhi on Monday.

But it was Delhi who claimed two crucial points by virtue of a 12-run first innings lead from the second round clash, played on a docile Ferozeshah Kotla track.

Bad light and the smog factor prevented play on the final day, which was limited to academic interest, as Delhi seemed happy with their first innings returns and did not look like forcing an outright win.

The only point of interest was whether Delhi opener Aakash Chopra, who was unbeaten on 68 overnight, would complete a century and make a double, having scored 150 in the first essay.

But with the conditions showing no signs of improving, apart from a brief period in between, the match was officially called off at 12.30 pm.

Having accumulated points from their opening two matches against tough opponents, Delhi coach Chetan Chauhan was quite pleased with the start to the campaign, especially since the team narrowly missed out on relegation last season.

"It's a good beginning. We have started well and gained points from our opening two matches, playing against strong opponents -- Tamil Nadu, to whom we lost last season, and Uttar Pradesh, who are the defending champions," said Chauhan.

While hinting of a more sporting track for the next match, Chauhan said, "I am happy with the manner in which the boys fought and defended the score of 299, which I thought was 50 to 60 runs short on such a flat track."

Delhi will now take on Baroda from December 9-12 while Uttar Pradesh host Karnataka.
