After Ponting's dismissal at 143 for three there was a mini collapse when Andrew Symonds was caught behind by Kumar Sangakkara off Muralitharan for one to leave the Australians 146 for four before Martyn was out two runs later.
Hussey (75 not out) and Watson (66 not out) arrested a slump by Australia when they lost three middle-order wickets for five runs after World XI spinners Daniel Vettori and Muttiah Muralitharan slowed the world champions' run rate.
