Adam Gilchrist continued his return to his belligerent best, scoring 32 off 31 balls, inclusive of two boundaries and a six, before he mistimed a pull off Shaun Pollock.
Captain Ricky Ponting (in pic) then combined with Damien Martyn in an edgy 85-run partnership that was punctuated with tentativeness in the running.
Ponting, who was dropped on 41 by Flintoff, then scored his 47th one-day international half century before he was caught by Brian Lara off Muttiah Muralitharan for 68.
