Ganguly on the other hand has now won toss in four consecutive Tests -- twice against Bangladesh (at Dhaka & Chittagong), and against Pakistan (at Mohali & Kolkata).

• Steve Bucknor became the first umpire to stand in 100 Test matches. It took Bucknor about 16 years to reach this landmark having made his debut in April 1989. The following table lists the umpires with most Test match appearances:

• Sachin Tendulkar (52) became the fifth batsman in Test annals to complete 10,000 runs when his score reached 27. He joined Sunil Gavaskar (India), Allan Border (Australia), Steve Waugh (Australia) and Brian Lara (West Indies).  By taking 195 innings to accomplish this feat, Tendulkar equaled Brian Lara's record of having done so in least number of innings.

• The third wicket partnership of 122 runs between Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar was the 58th century partnership involving Tendulkar. With this Tendulkar equalled the existing Indian record of most century partnerships hitherto held by Sunil Gavaskar.

• Rahul Dravid (110) became the seventh Indian batsman to aggregate 16,000 runs in first-class cricket when his score reached 64, joining the ranks of Sunil Gavaskar (25,834 runs), Vijay Hazare (18,740), Sachin Tendulkar (18,428), Gundappa Viswanath (17,970), Dilip Vengsarkar (17,868) and Polly Umrigar (16,155) Dravid was appearing in his 201st match and 326th innings.

• Dravid scored his 19th Test century - his second against Pakistan after 270 at Rawalpindi last year.

• VVS Laxman recorded seventh duck of his Test career and 20th of his first class career. This was second time Laxman was getting a golden duck in his Test career. The only other occasion was against Australia at Adelaide in 1999-00.

• The duck was Laxman's first at Eden Gardens. His previous lowest score in last six innings at this ground was 38. This is how Laxman has fared In his previous six innings at this venue: 67 vs Pakistan in 1998-99, 59 & 281 vs Australia in 2000-01, 48 & 154* vs West Indies in 2002-03 and 38 v South Africa 2004-05.

• Sourav Ganguly (12) failed once again at his home ground. In 11 innings of 7 Tests at Eden Gardens, he has managed to aggregate 280 runs at an average of 25.45 with a highest of 65.

• India's 344 for six is their highest total on the first day of a Test match in India, bettering 340 for three against Zimbabwe at Delhi in 1992-93.

• It was for the third time against Pakistan that India put on 300 or more runs on the opening day of a Test. The other two instances have been -- 334 (for 7) at Faisalabad in 1982-83 and 356 (for 2) at Multan in 2003-04.
