Nine in a row for Pakistan

Pakistan's defeat in Sydney Test was their ninth consecutive loss against Australia. Pakistan had faced a 3-0 whitewash in 1999-00, again a 3-0 clean sweep in 2002 and a 3-0 thrashing now.

In the history of Test cricket, only one team - England - has done worse. They lost 10 in a row to West Indies (5-0 twice in 1984 and 1985-86). The accompanying table lists the longest sequences of Test defeats against a particular opponent:

Tests Countries Period
10 Eng v Aus 1984 to 1985-86
9 WI v Aus 1998-99 to 2002-03
9* Pak v Aus 1999-00 to 2004-05
8 SA v Eng 1888-89 to 1898-99 (SA's first 8 Tests defeat)
8 Eng v Aus 1920-21 to 1921

Most for other teams:

7 Aus v Eng 1884-85 to 1887-88
7 NZ v Eng 1950-51 to 1958
7 Ind v WI 1961-62 to 1966-67
6* BD v Pak 2001-02 to 2003
5* Zim v SL 2001-02 to 2004
4 SL v Pak 1991-92 to 1995-96
4 SL v SA 2000-01 to 2002-03
4 SL v Aus 2003-04 to 2004
* = unbroken sequence
