Suresh Raina's century helped Uttar Pradesh score 242 for the loss of five wickets against Punjab on the first day of their Elite Group 'B' Ranji Trophy match at the K D Singh Babu stadium in Lucknow on Saturday.

Raina played brilliantly and completed his second ton of the season off 170 balls, inclusive of 18 fours.

He scored 127 before being stumped by Pankaj Dharmani off Rajesh Sharma.

Raina was the architect  of three major partnerships for the hosts as he added 57 runs for the second wicket with skipper Jyoti Yadav (14), 67 runs for the third wicket with Rizwan Shamshad (16) and 72 runs for the fourth wicket with Ravi Kant (35).

Gyanendra Pandey (14) and Mohammed Amir (17) were at the crease when stumps were drawn.

Off-spinner Rajesh Sharma was the most successful bowler for the visitors, claiming two wickets, while Harvinder Singh, Retinder Singh Sodhi and Bipul Sharma took one wicket each.
