England captain Michael Vaughan will miss the one-day series in Pakistan to have knee surgery.

Vaughan, who flew home for the birth of his second child after England's 2-0 Test series defeat, would not be returning to Pakistan as his knee injury required further investigation, team doctor Peter Gregory said on Tuesday.

"This procedure will allow treatment of any problems identified and being done in the next few days should allow sufficient time for Michael to recover for the tour of India next year," Gregory said in a statement.

Marcus Trescothick will lead England in the five-match series, which starts on December 10 in Lahore, and batsman Ian Bell will replace Vaughan in the squad.

"It is disappointing but surgery really is the only option for me at the moment," Vaughan said in a statement.

"Hopefully I can make a full recovery in time for the tour to India in the early stages of next year."

Vaughan injured his right knee during the in the tour match at Bagh-e-Jinnah early last month. He missed the first Test but played in the second and third matches.

The same knee problem forced Vaughan to miss the Test against New Zealand at Lords last year.

Vaughan had just one good score of 58 in the two Tests he played, struggling for form on the Pakistan pitches.

Opening batsman Andrew Strauss, who returned to England for the birth of his child, is scheduled to join the team late on Tuesday and will play in the warm up game on Wednesday.
