Makhaya Ntini returned the best match analysis by a South African to spur his team to an eight-wicket victory in the second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain on Tuesday.

South Africa, who needed 144 to win, scored 146 for two in their second innings shortly after tea on the fifth day.

Fast bowler Ntini took a career-best seven for 37 for a match haul of 13 for 132 as the West Indies were bowled out for 194 in their second innings, with Ramnaresh Sarwan making 107 not out.

Ntini took six for 95 in the first innings. It was his second 10-wicket haul. South Africa lead the four-match series 1-0.

The only other South African to claim 13 wickets in a test was off-spinner Hugh Tayfield, who took 13 for 165 against Australia in Melbourne in 1952-53, and 13 for 192 against England in Johannesburg in 1956-57.

The West Indies resumed on 170 for five, and lost their remaining five wickets for 24 to leave themselves in deep trouble.

South Africa took the second new ball in the third over of the day's play, and Ntini struck nine balls later when he had Dwayne Bravo caught behind for 33 to end a sixth-wicket stand of 88 shared with Sarwan.

Ntini trapped Courtney Browne in front for two in his next over and eight balls later fast bowler Andre Nel made it 189 for eight when Daren Powell was well caught at second slip by Jacques Kallis for one.

Ntini wrapped up the innings by yorking Pedro Collins and Reon King, both without scoring.

Sarwan batted for almost six hours, faced 221 balls and hit 11 fours.

South Africa were 45 without loss when AB de Villiers, on 31, had his off-stump uprooted by a no-ball from fast bowler King.

That prompted West Indies coach Bennett King to appear during lunch with a tape measure to help the paceman mark out his run.

But in the third over after the break another King no-ball looped off the leading edge of Graeme Smith's bat to Brian Lara at midwicket.

Smith batted conservatively for his 41 before falling in the fourth over before tea when he edged a drive off medium pacer Bravo to Chris Gayle at slip after an opening stand of 117.

Three overs later fast bowler Powell bowled De Villiers for 62.

Jacques Rudolph and Jacques Kallis took South Africa to victory.

The first Test in the four-match series was drawn in Georgetown on April 4. The third Test starts in Bridgetown on April 21.
