India would move up to second place in the ICC Test championship table if they win the four-Test series against Australia.
India have never been placed higher than fourth in the official Test table but this series provides an opportunity for them to close to within four points of leaders Australia, according to the ICC rankings released on Wednesday.
If India win all the four matches, their rating would climb up from 104 to 115 while Australia's would fall from 129 to 119.
A narrower winning margin would leave a bigger gap between the two sides but even if India win the series by only one Test margin, it will boost their rating to 111 --good enough for second place.

In the event of the series being drawn, India would go up from fourth to third while Australia's rating would fall from current 129 to 126 although they would continue to occupy the top place.
Australia just need a two-Test winning margin to improve their rating. A 3-0 or 4-0 victory would see Australia reach their highest ever rating in the official Test table.
England are currently placed second while Pakistan are third in the table.
