Debutant Hisham Amla, the first player of Asian origin in the South Africa side, got off to an impressive start.
However, he looked clueless as Pathan bowled him with a superb delivery that pitched on leg-stump and hit off.
Pathan then had vice-captain Dippenaar caught behind with an away-swinger to reduce South Africa to 182 for 5.
