Cairns... and able
The tall, strapping lad made his debut against the Aussies at the WACA, in Perth, and almost immediately realised that Test cricket was not easy. On that day he bowled 12 overs, took none for 60 and sustained a stress fracture to his lower back. That injury kept him out of cricket for six months. It was a crushing blow for the youngster.
It is often said that he did not reach his true potential due to his constant struggle for fitness. Some of the reasons that sidelined him: Stress fracture, intercostal strains, pulled hamstring, kidney problem, torn calf muscle, bruised heel, damaged patellar tendon (left knee), damaged patellar tendon (right knee), ruptured spleen, bruised knee, shoulder strain, groin strain, sacroiliac joint trouble, damaged wrist, sprained ankle, bone spur on heel.
