India leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who grabbed a world record 10 Pakistani wickets in an innings in 1999, will use that performance as an inspiration in the first Test between the two sides starting on Sunday.

The 33-year-old returned to the squad after missing the recent one-day series in Pakistan due to a shoulder injury.

"It's always good to take your past performances against a team as a positive factor," Kumble told reporters on Friday.

"It gives me lots of confidence that I've done well against Pakistan in the past. It's something I can use to get myself ready for this Test."

Kumble picked up 10 second-innings wickets for 74, only the second bowler in Test history to achieve the feat after England's Jim Laker, to bowl India to victory in the second test in New Delhi in February, 1999.

Kumble, the second-highest Test wicket-taker for India with 382 scalps in 81 Tests, has grabbed 22 wickets in three matches against Pakistan at an average of 20.50.

But he said it would be a challenge to get back into his rhythm after an injury layoff.

"I hope I won't take too much time to settle in," he said.

"I didn't have a major injury, it was just a shoulder strain. At this level, you have to be prepared to make adjustments quickly."

Kumble is on his first trip to Pakistan. He had missed a three-match one-day series in 1997, when the hosts won 2-1.
