Super Strauss

England confirmed their resurgence as a Test force with a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. This was the team's fourth win in five Tests in 2004, after they had beaten the West Indies 3-0.

England found a new star in opener Andrew Strauss.

Strauss hit a fluent 112 in the first innings to become the fourth batsman to score a Test century on debut at Lord's and the 15th England player overall.

Coming in as a late replacement for injured captain Michael Vaughan, the left-hander also anchored the home innings in the second essay.

He was unfortunately run out on 83 and missed out on being the first England player to score two centuries on debut.
