The Indian cricket team had more great news close on the heels of its first Test victory in Pakistan yesterday. Veteran leg-spinner Anil Kumble, the most senior member of the side, became a proud father when his wife Chethana delivered their first child, a boy, today.

The baby, weighing 4.2kg, was delivered through caesarian section at Dr Kamini Rao's Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre on Friday morning, a hospital source told the Press Trust of India.

"Both the mother and child are fine," the source said. "They [the Kumbles] are very, very happy. The boy is cute."

"I am elated," Kumble said later.

The Kumbles have a daughter, Aaruni, from Chethana's previous marriage to a Bangalore stockbroker. They won custody of her only in January this year.

Kumble had returned to Bangalore last night from Pakistan to attend the birth of his child. The 33 year-old leggie had played a crucial hand in the Multan victory with an eight-wicket match haul.

He will rejoin his teammates in Lahore tomorrow, two days before the start of the second Test.
