Australian opener Matthew Hayden was dropped after 13 games and a year into his one-day international career and had to wait six years before another chance came along.
However, when the opportunity came he made no mistake and has since then become a permanent fixture in the one-day team.
In the initial stages of his career, Hayden had problems with the spinners but after his double hundred in Chennai, India, two years ago he learnt how to cope with them.
Hayden had only played 19 one-day internationals in eight years, since making his debut against England at Old Trafford and scored 477 runs at an average of 29.81, with a best score of 67.
How times have changed! Since then, Hayden has almost doubled his ODI average and is now arguably one of the best batsmen in the world besides holding the world record for the highest individual Test score of 380 against Zimbabwe this month.
