Gavaskar's initial success, needless to say, was splendid. In his first 50 Tests, he scored 20 centuries. Only Don Bradman had a higher ratio.

During the early years, his concentration was supreme; it seldom wavered. He played the hook only when required and used the crease exceptionally well.
