Match report
The partnership of 113 runs between Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman was the best for India at the Oval for the 5th wicket bettering the previous best of 63 runs between Vijay Merchant and Rusi Modi during the 1946 series.
Dravid's 217 was his highest score of his career bettering his previous best of 200 not out against Zimbabwe at Delhi in November 2000. It also betters his previous highest in an away Test match, which was the 190 against New Zealand at Hamilton in 1999.
Dravid, who became the sixth Indian batsman to record the seventh double hundred in an away Test match (with Sunil Gavaskar doing so on two separate occasions), missed the record score by an Indian abroad which still remains as the 221 by Gavaskar also against England and at this venue in September 1979.
Dravid also took his aggregate for this series to 602 runs in six innings, making him the only third Indian batsman to make 600-plus runs in a series. The others being Gavaskar - twice - 774 runs (4 Tests, 8 innings, avg. 154.80 in West Indies in 1971) & 732 (6 Tests, 9 innings, avg. 91.50 v WI in India in 1978-79) and Dilip Sardesai (5 Tests, 8 innings, avg. 80.25 in West Indies in 1971).
Dravid now has the maximum runs by an Indian in a series against England which surpasses Vijay Manjrekar's 586 runs in 5 Tests and 8 innings, avg 83.71 during the 1961-62 home series against Ted Dexter's Englishmen. He also goes past Gavaskar's aggregate of 542 runs (4 matches, 7 innings, avg 77.43) in England during the 1979 tour.
Dravid while staying at the crease for 632 mins (10 hours, 32 mins) became the sixth Indian batsman for the seventh time to bat for more than 10 hours in an innings.
Interestingly, Dravid in this series has so far batted 1864 mins (31 hours, 4 mins) while scoring 602 runs in six innings. This means he has batted for an entire five days of a Test match, which normally lasts 30 hours.
Meanwhile, Dravid became Test cricket's only sixth batsman to be dismissed run-out after scoring a double-century. His score of 217 was now the fourth highest among such batsmen. West Indians Brain Lara (277 v Australia at Sydney in 1992-93) & Conrad Hunte (260 v Pakistani at Kingston in 1957-58) and Indian Sanjay Manjrekar (218 v Pakistan at Lahore in 1989-90) are the other batsmen to record double centuries before being dismissed run-out.
Incidentally, the run out of Dravid was the 100th at this venue since the first victim Englishman Fred Morley against Australia on September 7, 1880, which incidentally was first ever match at this venue and England.
During his unbeaten knock of 47, Michael Vaughan became the only second Englishman to make 600-plus runs in a series against India after former opener Graham Gooch who had made 752 runs (avg. 125.33) in three matches and six innings during the 1990 series at home.Vaughan now has 615 runs.
Vaughan now has exactly 900 runs this summer in seven matches against Sri Lanka and India. Only Englishman Graham Gooch - 1058 runs in six Tests against New Zealand and India in 1990 and Australian Don Bradman - 974 runs in five Test in 1930 - have made more Test runs during an English summer.
