This match was the only second ever Test to be played in England which began in the month of September. Since 1880 and 408 Test matches on English soil, the only other start to a Test match in September was the first ever to be played in England. It began on 6th September 1880 against Australia at this very venue.
Sachin Tendulkar joined an elite band of 25 other players to have made 100 or more Test appearances. He also becomes the fourth Indian after Sunil Gavaskar (in 1984-85), Dilip Vengsarkar (in 1988-89), and Kapil Dev (in 1989-90) to reach this landmark.
Meanwhile, Tendulkar, at 29 years, 134 days became the youngest to appear in 100 Test matches in history. The previous record was held by former teammate Kapil Dev who was 30 years 313 days.
The 174 run partnership between Michael Vaughan and Mark Butcher was the best for England against India at this ground. The pair bettered the previous best partnership of 118 runs between David Sheppard and Jack Ikin during the 1952 series.
When his score reached 144 Vaughan during his unbeaten knock of 182 became the highest run-getter this calendar year. He went past the tally of 932 runs by Sachin Tendulkar. Vaughan now has 971 runs to his credit.
Vaughan's century was his fourth this summer at home. He had made 115 against Sri Lanka in May; and this was his third in this series against India. He becomes the sixth batsman to register four Test hundreds in an English season. The others being Herbert Sutcliffe (v SA in 1929), Australian Don Bradman (in 1930), Denis Compton (v SA in 1947), Allan Lamb (3 v WI and 1 v SL in 1984) and Graham Gooch (1 v NZ and 3 v India in 1990).
Vaughan also became the third Englishman after Ken Barrington (in 1961-62) and Gooch (in 1990) to register three hundreds against India in a series.
Vaughan also becomes the only second Englishman after Gooch to aggregate over 500 runs in a home series against India. Gooch had made 752 runs in three Tests in 1990. Vaughan now has 555 runs.
Meanwhile, Vaughan, when on 7, became the 75th batsman to aggregate 1000 runs on English soil. He also becomes the 48th Englishman to do so.
Rahul Dravid took his 8th catch as a fielder in this series. It is the maximum by an Indian fielder in a Test series in England.
