Kirtley and Irani included in England squad

England selectors picked in-form all-rounder Ronnie Irani and controversial bowler James Kirtley on Wednesday in a squad of 15 for their triangular one-day series with India and Sri Lanka starting on June 27.

Kirtley, whose bowling has prompted accusations of throwing, worked on his action throughout the close season, chairman of selectors David Graveney said in a statement.

"James Kirtley is aware of the environment that he is coming into as an international cricketer and has done a lot of remedial work on his action...over the winter," Graveney said.

"As far as the selectors are concerned, he has been cleared to play by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) Bowling Review Group, has performed successfully for Sussex this season..."

Kirtley impressed with England's one-day side against Zimbabwe in October but was then reported for a suspect action.

Graveney said that Irani was "in the form of his life" at Essex and deserved another chance at international level. Irani played the last of his 10 one-dayers three years ago.

Graveney said in choosing the squad the selectors had decided that all the Test players who had recently wrapped up a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka and who were fit deserved to be picked.

"We felt we made some important strides in one-day cricket during the winter, but we are definitely reaching the conclusion that the best players should be playing in both forms of international cricket."

He added that top fast bowler Darren Gough and batsman Paul Collingwood, who were recovering from knee injuries, were easing themselves back into cricket and their fitness would be reassessed before the first match. Pace bowler Andy Caddick has been ruled out with a side strain.
