Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Tower of London, St. Paul's, Harrods -- all linked inextricably with the history of London. And then there is Lord's, linked as much with the history of the city, as with the game of cricket.
The Lord's Cricket ground, situated at St John's Wood, London, is considered the premier ground in the world. It is the home of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) which owns the ground and is also the home ground and headquarters of the Middlesex County Cricket Club.
Thomas Lord, after whom the ground is named, acquired the lease on a piece of land in 1810 and by May 1814 the new ground (site of the present Lord's), complete with pavilion and tavern, was opened.
The first match was between MCC and Hertfordshire, which the former won by 27 runs. The first Test match at Lord's was held in 1884 and since then 103 matches have played here including one between Australia and South Africa in 1912. England have appeared in 102 matches - won 37, lost 25 and drawn 40, while India who played its first ever Test match in 1932 at this venue have appeared in 13 matches here - won one (in 1986), lost nine and drew three.

Tests at The Oval, London

Capacity: 16,500
Home Team: Surrey, England
The Surrey County Cricket Club, which was formed in 1845, has the Kennington Oval, now known as the AMP Oval, as its home ground and headquarters.
In the 1840s William Baker, treasurer of the Montpelier Cricket Club, took a lease on a 10 acres of ground, then used as a market garden at the Oval, in Kennington, London. This land was then converted to a cricket ground.
First-class matches have been played at this ground since 1846. The ground has the distinction of hosting the first ever Test match in England in 1880. Since then 84 matches have played here - all by the host team, who have won 33, lost 18 and drawn 33, while India have played eight matches here since its first in 1936. India have won a Test in 1971 - its first ever in England and have lost two (in 1936 & 1959). Rest of the five matches were drawn.
