Trescothick out of first Test

England opener Marcus Trescothick has been ruled out of next week's first Test against India with a cracked thumb.

Trescothick, who joins pace bowler Andrew Caddick on the sidelines for the July 25-29 Lord's Test, broke his left thumb while playing for Somerset against Worcestershire in a county one-day championship quarterfinal at Taunton, on the south coast of England.

Trescothick, who will now undergo surgery, was hurt when he stopped a fierce cover drive from Graeme Hick. The left-hander immediately left the field.

"Marcus has cracked his left thumb and will have an operation to pin it as soon as possible," Somerset chief executive Peter Anderson said.

"England coach Duncan Fletcher has been informed."

Caddick injured his ribs during the third Test victory over Sri Lanka at Old Trafford last month and failed a fitness test to play for Somerset today.

"He had a fitness test and didn't come through it too well," Somerset coach Kevin Shine said.

"He has not set himself back but he will have rehab and that will take a couple of weeks. I would be amazed if he was fit for the first Test and I have spoken to Duncan Fletcher and told him the situation.

"The thing with Caddy is that he is a quick healer. He is desperate to get back and play and he was desperately disappointed when this happened,"

England face India in the first Test at Lord's, beginning on July 25.
