England set India 230
to win off 32 overs
England scored 229 for eight off their 32 overs in the rain-affected triangular one-day series match against India at The Oval on Tuesday.
Wickets clattered near the end as England lost three wickets in three balls with the score on 219.
But a six by Darren Gough off the last ball of the innings lifted the home side to a challenging total.
The foundations had been laid by half centuries from Ronnie Irani (53) and Andrew Flintoff (51) with Nick Knight (31) and Michael Vaughan (30) adding useful contributions.
India captain Sourav Ganguly had won the toss and decided to bowl. Play was delayed for more than four hours due to persistent rain throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning and the match had to be reduced to 32 overs per side.
Pace bowler Matthew Hoggard was included in the England team, while India brought in Ajay Ratra as wicketkeeper after Rahul Dravid injured his hamstring.
Both sides have already sealed a place in final of the series at Lord's on Saturday at the expense of Sri Lanka.
