Sanath Jayasuriya playing in his 260th match registered his 12th LOI hundred, which was also his ninth away from home.
It was his first three-figure innings against England. His previous highest score was 82 (in 44 balls) at Faisalabad on 9-3-1996, which was during the 1996 World Cup.
Jayasuriya's 78-ball 100 was the quickest in terms of balls by any batsman in a LOI match in England. The previous quickest was the 82-ball hundred by West Indian Clive Lloyd during his 102 against Australia at Lord's on 21-6-1975, in the final of the 1975 World Cup.
The Sri Lankan's hundred was also the quickest by any batsman against England obliterating the previous best by Pakistani Majid Khan in 88 balls during his knock of 109 at Nottingham on 31-8-1974.
Matthew Hoggard's figures of 4-0-53-0 @ 13.25 runs per over represents the worst economical bowling spell by any bowler bowling at least four overs in a LOI match. Hoggard in fact equals the previous dubious record of Zimbabwean Ian Butchart, who too had identical figures against New Zealand at Napier on 3-3-1992.
The match winning partnership of 66 runs between Paul Collingwood and Alec Stewart was the best for England against Sri Lanka for the seventh wicket bettering the previous best of 55 runs between Neil Fairbrother and Robert Croft at Perth on 29-1-1999.
The partnership was also the best for the seventh wicket at this ground surpassing the previous best of 55 unbeaten runs between Australians Doug Walters and Gary Gilmour against the home team on 18-6-1975 - during the first ever World Cup.
England's 241-7 in 31.2 overs meant that they scored the runs @ 7.69 runs per over. This was the fourth quickest run-rate achieved by any team scoring at least 200 runs in an innings.
The 481 runs scored in the match @ 7.59 run per over was the second fastest ever achieved by two teams in a completed LOI match. The best still remains as the 7.83 runs per over in the India-England match at Chandigarh on 27-1-1985.
