Gough returns as England
opt to field

Darren Gough, back from a knee injury, was selected by England as the home side opted to field first against Sri Lanka in their rain-curtailed triangular series one-dayer on Tuesday.

The match was cut to 32 overs a side after rain caused a four-hour delay.

Gough had two operations on his right knee after sustaining the injury playing for England against New Zealand in a one-day international in Dunedin at the end of February.

The match will be his first senior appearance this season after playing second team cricket for Yorkshire last week.

He replaced left-arm spinner Ashley Giles, who took three wickets in the defeat to India at Lord's at the weekend.

"I am willing to play whatever the situation and I won't be holding back or pulling out of diving stops. Once I get out on the pitch I will be giving 110 per cent.

"Obviously, it would have been good to get five or six games under my belt, but I've got a simple action and I'm not worried about who I'm bowling against," said Gough.

Sri Lanka selected an extra batsman in Kumar Sangakkara after losing their first two matches in the tri-angular series. Sangakkara replaced Buddhika Fernando while Avishka Gunawardene replaced Naveed Nawaz.

Teams:

England: Marcus Trescothick, Nick Knight, Nasser Hussain (capt), Graham Thorpe, Alec Stewart, Ronnie Irani, Andy Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Darren Gough, James Kirtley, Matthew Hoggard.

Sri Lanka: Sanath Jayasuriya, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Marvan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardene, Russel Arnold, Kumar Sangakkara, Avishka Gunawardene, Upul Chandana, Chaminda Vaas, Nuwan Zoysa, Dilhara Fernando.
