Statistical highlights of Nagpur Test (4th day)

Mohandas Menon

** Sanjay Bangar's unbeaten 100 in his only second innings (but second Test match) makes him the only second Indian batsman after Pankaj Roy to register a maiden Test hundred in the only second innings of their respective careers but in their second Test match. Roy, like Bangar, had made 140 in his only second innings against England at the Brabourne Stadium in December 1951, after making his debut in the previous match at Delhi (he had scored 12). Bangar had made 36 in his only innings against England at Mohali in December 2001.

** Meanwhile, Bangar's hundred was the 12th by eight Indian batsmen while batting at number seven. Kapil Dev has in fact scored five hundreds in this position.

** Incidentally, it was the only third such hundred against Zimbabwe in Tests after the 124 by New Zealand's Chris Cairns (at Harare, September 2000) and Sri Lankan Thilan Samaraweera (at Colombo, SSC, December 2001). For the record, Kapil Dev's 60 at Harare in October 1992 was the previous highest score by a number seven against Zimbabwe.

** The partnership of 171 runs between Sachin Tendulkar and Bangar was the best for India against Zimbabwe for the sixth wicket bettering the previous best of 96 between Sanjay Manjrekar and Kapil Dev at Harare in October 1992. It was also the second best partnership for this wicket against Zimbabwe in Tests. The unbeaten 189 between Sri Lankans Aravinda deSilva and Arjuna Ranatunga at Colombo, SSC in January 1998 remains the best.

** However the Tendulkar-Bangar partnership was the best for the sixth wicket at this ground obliterating the previous best of 159 between fellow Indians Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble against Sri Lanka in November 1997.

** The three hundreds in the innings equals the Indian record. The feat have been achieved by Indian batsmen now on eleven occasions. Interestingly, the last occasion was also against the same opponents and at the same venue in November 2000. The only other team to score three hundreds in the same innings against Zimbabwe was South Africa at Harare in September 2001.

** The 68 overs (408 balls) by Ray Price was the third maximum bowled by a Zimbabwean bowler in Tests. Price had himself bowled 79 overs (474 balls) against South Africa at Bulawayo in September 2001, while leg-spinner Paul Strang had delivered 69 overs (414 balls) against Pakistan at Sheikhupura in October 1996.

** Meanwhile only three other bowlers have delivered more overs in an innings against India. They are: Pakistani off-spinner Haseeb Ahsan (84 overs/504 balls) at Madras (Coprn) in January 1961, Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (75/450) at Mohali in November 1997 and Kiwi left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (71/426) also at Mohali in October 1999.

** The wicket of Andy Flower was Anil Kumble's 200th in 35 matches on Indian soil. He becomes the second Indian after Kapil Dev (219 wickets in 65 matches) to reach this landmark on home soil. For the record, Sri Lankan Muralitharan has taken 260 wickets in 43 matches in Sri Lanka - the maximum by any Test bowler on home soil.

** Gavin Rennie (25, when on 2) became the 9th Zimbabwean and the 377th batsman in Test history to reach 1000 career runs. He was appearing in his 23rd Test and 46th innings.
