Statistical highlights of Nagpur Test (2nd day)

Mohandas Menon

** The 59 run partnership between Travis Friend and Ray Price was the best for Zimbabwe against India for the ninth wicket bettering the previous best of 33 between Adam Huckle and Henry Olonga at Harare in October 1998. It was in fact the third best for this wicket for Zimbabwe against any country.

** However the Friend-Price partnership was the best for the ninth wicket at this ground, bettering the 55 (unbeaten) between Indians Madan Lal and Syed Kirmani against Pakistan in October 1983.

** Meanwhile the unbeaten 60 by Friend was the second best by a Zimbabwean batsman batting at number nine. Friend's 81 against Bangladesh at Dhaka last November remains the best. Incidentally, it was the highest by a number nine against India since the 67 by Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan at Kandy last August. For the record, the highest score made by a visiting batsman at number nine in India remains as the 73 by Australian Ian Johnson at the Corporation Ground, Madras in October 1956.

** Friend's unbeaten 60 was also the highest by a number nine at this venue. The other individual scores over fifty at number nine were the 54 by West Indian keeper Junior Murray and the unbeaten 52 by Anil Kumble in the same match in December 1994.

** Anil Kumble, claimed his best figures (4-82) at this venue. This was his third match here, although he did not bowl in the rain affected Test against Sri Lanka in November 1997. He had figures of 3-131 and 3-45 against the West Indies in December 1994.

** The partnership of 79 between Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta India's best for the opening wicket against Zimbabwe. The previous best was the 72 between Das and S Ramesh at this very ground in November 2000.

** The above partnership was also the best for the first wicket at this venue, eclipsing the 78 by Indians Aushuman Gaekwad and Sunil Gavaskar against Pakistan in October 1983.
