Mohandas Menon

India vs England, 2nd Test, day 4, at Nottingham Test

  • Scorecard | Match report | Images
  • ** The 87 by Alec Stewart, was the joint second highest score by a keeper at this venue. Stewart equals his own score, which he made against Australia in August 1997. The best however still remains as the 135 by former England keeper Alan Knott against Australia in July 1977. For the record, the previous highest score by an England keeper against India at this venue was the 73 by Godfrey Evans in June 1959.

** The 103 run partnership between Craig White and Matthew Hoggard was the best for England against India for the ninth wicket, bettering the previous best of 83 between Keith Fletcher and Norman Gifford at Madras in January 1973.

** The partnership was also the best for the ninth wicket at this ground obliterating the previous best of 89 runs between Englishmen Jim Laker and Alec Bedser against Australia in June 1948.

** The unbeaten 94 by White was the highest by an England number eight batsman against India surpassing the previous best of 81 runs by Richard Hutton at the Oval in August 1971.

** Hoggard, who was playing in his 13th match and 17th innings, for the first time in his career went in at a batting position above number 11. His score of 32 was his best of his Test career bettering the 17 not out he had made against Sri Lanka at Birmingham in June this year.

** Hoggard, meanwhile also bettered his previous highest first-class score, which was the unbeaten 21 for an England XI against Gauteng at Johannesburg in 1999-00. This means two Yorkshiremen (Vaughan and Hoggard) bettered their previous highest first-class scores in this Test match.

** Saurav Ganguly's bowling analysis 5-0-42-0 (r/o: 8.40) was the worst by any Indian bowler bowling at least five overs in an innings. Previously Anil Kumble (8-0-56-0; r/o 8.00) against the West Indies at Mohali in December 1994 had the worst-ever bowling analysis in an innings for India.

** Ganguly's analysis was also the worst ever by any bowler against England. Australian Jason Gillespie (8-0-65-3; r/o 8.13) at this same venue in August 1997 and Sri Lankan Eric Upashantha (8-0-56-1; r/o 8.13) at Manchester in June 2002 - have the worst bowling analysis in a Test innings before Ganguly.

** England's total of 617 was its 14th score over 600 in Tests. Interestingly, the last occasion England made a total of over 600-plus was also against India at Lord's way back in July 1990, when it made 653-4 decl. In between these matches England have played in 132 matches and its highest score was 593 against the West Indies at St John's in April 1994.

** Virender Sehwag became the 7th Indian batsman, who has had the misfortune of recording a duck in the second innings of a Test match after scoring a hundred in the first. However, Sehwag can take some comfort from the fact that the only other batsman who has scored a hundred and a duck in the same match at the venue was Australian Don Bradman in June 1948.

** Sachin Tendulkar (56 not out) who went past the Test aggregate of 8032 runs of West Indian Gary Sobers on the first day, went past the aggregate of 8114 runs of England's Geoff Boycott, when his score had reached 49 in the second innings. Tendulkar with 8122 runs is now in the eighth position in the all-time list of batsmen with maximum Test run aggregates.
