Laxman's innings was special: Buchannan

Australia cricket coach John Buchannan commended Indian batsmen VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid on their splendid performance in the second Test at the Eden Gardens.

Talking to journalists after play on the fourth day, Buchannan said Laxman's knock was something he had rarely seen in recent times from any Indian batsmen.

He applauded the Hyderabadi hero's determination and concentration, saying: "His [Laxman's] innings is special, especially when you see the situation under which he came in to bat. He was involved in three or four partnerships, of which the one with Rahul Dravid was crucial, which put India in the driving seat."

Asked to comment on Australia's sloppy show in the field on Wednesday, he said his players were exhausted after remaining in the field for over two days at a stretch after forcing India to follow-on.

"It's been a lot of hard work; it's even harder when you don't get returns for the efforts you put in. But I am sure the players will have nice sleep tonight and go on the ground with a refreshing mind set next morning."

He denied that the Australians were under pressure because of their record 16-Test winning streak.

"I don't remember if we had something like 13th, 14th or 15th Test victory in our minds before we went on to play those matches. We will go on to the field tomorrow [Thursday] morning to win the match. Our bowlers had already slowed down the Indians' scoring rate in the last session. Cricket is a funny game. You never know how will the game turn," he added.

Buchanan said his team will decide whether to go for a victory or try to save the match depending upon the target India sets them.
