6th match: Coca Cola Tri series in Zimbabwe
India vs West Indies
Carl Hooper (24, when on 1) became the third West Indian and the 16th
batsman in LOI history to reach 1000 runs against India. He now has 1023
runs in 35 matches.
Harvinder Singh (65 runs in 10 overs) has conceded the second most runs
by a visiting bowler in a LOI match in Zimbabwe. Bangladesh's teenage pace
bowler Mohammad Sharif at Bulawayo on 11-4-2001 had conceded the maximum of
77 runs in 10 overs. Incidentally Harvinder has conceded the sixth maximum
runs by a bowler in a LOI match in Zimbabwe.
The partnership in this match between Ganguly and Tendulkar for the first
wicket has made them the most durable in LOI history. The pair has opened
the Indian innings on 103 occasions since their first together against South
Africa at Jaipur on 23-10-1996. The pair had then begun their long durable
partnership with a hundred-plus stand of 126 runs. The Indian pair went
ahead of former West Indian openers Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge who
have opened the innings on 102 occasions from 1979 to 1991.
The 133 run partnership between Ganguly and Tendulkar was the best for
the first wicket by any team on Zimbabwe soil. The previous best was the 124
by Zimbabwe's Flower brothers - Grant and Andy - against New Zealand at this
same ground on 8-11-1992. The only other 100-plus partnership for the first
wicket in Zimbabwe came in the first match of this series also at Harare,
when the West Indian pair of Daren Ganga and Chris Gayle put on 113 against
the home team on 23-6-2001. Interestingly, India's best in Zimbabwe was the
44 between Ganguly and Tendulkar against the home team at Bulwayo on
27-9-1998.
Tendulkar (122 not out, when on 76) became the first Indian (Azhar has
998 runs) and the ninth batsman in LOI history to score over 1000 runs
against West Indies. The list includes five Pakistanis and three
Australians. For the record, Javed Miandad has the maximum runs - 1930 in 64
matches. Tendulkar in 28 matches has an aggregate of 1046 runs against the
West Indies.
Tendulkar, who extended his record career LOI hundreds to 29 in 272
matches, became the highest individual scorer for India against the West
Indies, when he bettered the previous best of 114 not out by Navjot Singh
Sidhu at Visakhapatnam on 7-11-1994.
Tendulkar, who extended his man of the match awards to 41, now has six
such awards - the maximum by any player against the West Indies. Pakistani
all-rounder Imran Khan had five awards in 49 matches.
India has reached the final of a three-or-more nation tournament on 33
occasions. They have won 17 titles, and on16 occasions they were runner-up.
Interestingly India has now lost its last six final matches. India's last
tournament win came in November 1998 at Sharjah.
