    The venues The Englishmen's love for the willow, sports and club life originated humming activities of cricket by 1865 at Chepauk green. The present Madras Cricket Club (MCC) Pavilion was built in 1892. The velvety emerald green turf of Chepauk, of hoary traditions is the pride of the votaries of the game. The area of the ground and structures occupies nearly 20 acres. The famous Madras Presidency matches - between the local Indians and the Europeans - began at this ground in 1915-16. Douglas Jardine's England team played the first ever Test match at this venue in February 1934. India in fact won its first ever Test match at this venue in February 1952 when it won the fifth and final Test against Nigel Howard's England team by an innings and 8 runs.

    From 1955 to 1965 all Test matches in Madras was played at the Nehru (Corporation) Stadium. However it was only in 1965 the Tamil Nadu (then Madras) Cricket Association have become lessees of the ground, when a gigantic stadium with all the modern amenities was built at a cost of Rs. two crores. The seating capacity was about 55,000. Since 1967 all Test matches have been played here at the Chepauk. In September 1986 the second ever tied Test match was witnessed at this venue.

    The opening match of the 1987 World Cup - between India and Australia - was the first one-day international match to be played here. During in the 1996 World Cup flood-lights were installed for the first time at this venue. So far seven ODI matches have been played here. The MA Chidambaram Stadium, named after the former BCCI President, has hosted 24 Test matches.
