'Kaante will be an improvement on my earlier films'
For a young director Sanjay Gupta has always managed to stir controversy with his projects. When he appeared on The Rediff Chat, he had just had a fallout with the producer of Jung. Gupta, supported by lead actor Sanjay Dutt, simply disowned the film because of the producer's supposedly errant ways. Jung is a box office wash out, but that didn't deter his fans from first ripping his failures and then backslapping him on his future project and newly formed company. Read on...
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:26 IST)
Hey everyone, let's chat :-)
Ila (Wed Apr 19 2:54 IST)
Hi Sanjay, what was the problem with Jung? Satish Tandon says that you were overshooting and spen ding too much...whats the real story?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:27 IST)
Ila: It's a long story and enough has been said. All I can say is that he is a disgusting liar. He's just busy contradicting his own statements. As far as I am concerned, it's a pity that I can't complete my film -- it's looking terrific.
praveen (Wed Apr 19 6:28 IST)
when did you start you film career
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:30 IST)
Praveen: I started my career when I was 14. I had just passed out of school when I started working with Pankaj Parashar as an apprentice. I went to college simultaneously.
ABUBABE (Wed Apr 19 6:11 IST)
ARE YOU MARRIED SANJAY
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:42 IST)
abubabe: Yes, to my dream woman, Anuradha.
Gopi Patel (Wed Apr 19 6:42 IST)
Mr. Sanjay Gupta, Does the film "Kaante" exist?. If so, please tell me what role Amitji plays in the upcoming film. Is is a remake of Quentin Tarentino's 'Reservior Dogs'?. I also hear it's all male cast, no heroines and no songs...Is this accurate?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:47 IST)
Gopi Patel: It's not entirely inspired by Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. We actually go back to the films that Tarantino was inspired by -- Stanley Kubrick's The Killing and the Hong Kong film, City On Fire. What Amitji does in the film is contrary to anything he has done in the past. He plays an legendary ex-con past his prime, who plans to pull off one last job with the help of the other guys. As far as songs are concerned, yes, we don't have any traditional running around the trees. And, of course, we have heroines in the film though they have yet to be finalised.
RAJ (Wed Apr 19 6:41 IST)
Mr. Gupta....how come all your films are in to big controversy? Why do proudcers and stars have hard time with you...with an exception of Sanjay Dutt. I would really like to know.
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:49 IST)
Raj: Well, why the exception of Sanjaay Dutt? Almost all the other stars I have worked with have had no problems with me and, if I was so problematic, a producer of the stature of GP Sippy would not repeat me. I don't know, maybe I'm not too good at dodging controversies. If someone tries to mess with me, I confront them head on. I hope that answers your question.
RAJ (Wed Apr 19 6:54 IST)
I really wish you all the best Mr. Gupta. Hameshaa was fine technial film but the treatment was not really appriciated. I hope to see a lot of imporovement in Kaante. And also, I am will be in film business very soon.
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:52 IST)
I'm really sorry to dissappoint you, Raj, but I don't think I agree with you. As far as I am concerned, Hameshaa was far superior to my earlier work. If you were in the film business you would realise that, once a film has been in the making for over three-and-a-half years, it gets out of everybody's hand. I'm sure you'll find Kaante to be an improvement on my earlier films.
maj (Wed Apr 19 6:43 IST)
Is there any hope for Jung, can things be sorted out!! I think at any circumstance you should try to sort thing out, because Tandon is stupid and you have to stop him from destroying the movie!!
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:53 IST)
Maj: Believe me, brother, I tried every trick in the book to make this man see sense, but he is beyond us. I regret not getting to complete the film.
Arjun Pandit (Wed Apr 19 6:55 IST)
Mr. Sanjay Gupta ji, I am a huge fan of Hameshaa and loved Aatish....i just wanted to know the final cast of Kaante, the budget for the movie, when will start shooting, and are you bringing in hollywood technicians to shoot the film?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:55 IST)
Arjun Pandit: The cast of Kaante is Amitabh, Sanju, Sunil, Akshaye, Kumar Gaurav and Mahesh Manjrekar. The budgeting is still going on, but it's huge. And we will be shooting it where you are, in the US of A.
maj (Wed Apr 19 6:30 IST)
Sanjay what is the other film apart from Kaante you have in hand the one produced by just Bobby Anand??
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:56 IST)
Maj: Well, apart from Kaante, I'm doing this film for Bobby Anand. It's tentatively titled Dostana. I'm also doing a film for Shyam Bajaj and Rajeev Babbar, but more on that later.
maj (Wed Apr 19 6:56 IST)
Sanjay will the technichian of Kaantee, be from Hollywood like its been reported??
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 6:58 IST)
Maj: Yes, the technical team will be from Hollywood.
Tina (Wed Apr 19 6:57 IST)
why do all ur films star sunjay dutt? and manisha and raveena also seem to look like regulars!
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:0 IST)
Tina: Sanjay is in all my films because I'm comfortable working with him, apart from the fact that he is a fabulous actor and a great looker and, above all, a fantastic human being.
maj (Wed Apr 19 6:59 IST)
Who plays the cop in Kaante, I have read its a movie about 5 criminals and one cop, is it Sanju Baba??
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:0 IST)
Maj: HA HA :-) That's for you to find out!
RAJ (Wed Apr 19 6:59 IST)
Mr. Gupta, Kaante has big expectations, do you feel Challenged?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:1 IST)
Raj: Majorly... it's an ensemble cast. Just working with all these guys and making a film that is not run-of-the-mill is the biggest challenge in itself.
Baba (Wed Apr 19 6:59 IST)
WHO WILL BE IN THE OTHER FILMS YOU A PLANNING AND WHAT ARE THE STORIES
Baba (Wed Apr 19 7:1 IST)
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF VAASTAV , AND IS MAHESH MANJREKAR A GOOD ACTOR
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:3 IST)
Baba: It's too early to comment on the starcast of my forthcoming films. Coming to Mahesh, he is originally an actor from the Marathi stage. I have seen him perform and he is very good at it.
Sonia (Wed Apr 19 7:2 IST)
why do u always take on established stars?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:4 IST)
Sonia: Because I'm not established myself. The day I am, I'll start working with newcomers
Myron (Wed Apr 19 7:3 IST)
wud u make another film with raveena and karisma together.....after all the trouble u went thro in aatish?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:5 IST)
Myron: Why not? After all, the trouble was caused by two gorgeous women. I'm sure you'd like to be in the crossfire too ;-)
maj (Wed Apr 19 7:4 IST)
Man Jackie, seemed well out of order in the Jung controversy, I though he was better than that!! You must be dissapointed in him as a friend!!
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:6 IST)
Maj: Yes, man. That's why it hurts so much, coming from a friend. But he is a cool guy and I'm sure things will work out.
Baba (Wed Apr 19 7:4 IST)
THANKS, THE BACKGROUND SCORE OF YOUR FILMS IS AMAZING , WHO WILL DO THE MUSIC OF KAANTE ?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:6 IST)
Baba: A R Rahman
praveen (Wed Apr 19 6:44 IST)
dear sanjay when you look back which moment turned you to be the sanjay of today.
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:8 IST)
Praveen: I don't know, man. That's a tough one to answer. I'm still soul searching.
Mahendra (Wed Apr 19 7:7 IST)
Mr. Gupta, you have just launched a proudction company with Bobby and Sanjay right? What is the company's name and what film will be the first one to made under it?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:10 IST)
Mahendra: The company's name is White Feather Films. A White Feather is a good luck charm amongst Red Indians and Mexicans. It denotes good luck, prosperity and longevity. I hope that goes for my films too.
Baba (Wed Apr 19 7:8 IST)
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE INDIAN AND ENGLISH MOVIES ?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:11 IST)
Baba: Amongst the Indian films are the works of Vijay Anand, Mani Rathnam, Vinod Chopra and J P Dutta. And, internationally, all the films of Kurusawa, Sergio Leone, Martin Scorsese and of course Tarantino.
Rakesh (Wed Apr 19 7:13 IST)
GREAT , WILL KAANTE HAVE HONG KONG STYLE ACTION ? WILL THIER BE A VILLAN ? AND WHO IS THE CINEMATOGRAPHER?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:14 IST)
Rakesh: Yes, the action is very John Woo meets Scorsese. The cinematographer from India is going to be Binod Pradhan and he will be collaborating with a guy from Hollywood.
Lata (Wed Apr 19 7:13 IST)
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS DUTTS BEST PERFORMANCE ?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:15 IST)
Lata: Naam
RAJ (Wed Apr 19 7:14 IST)
Mr. Gupta, you always make action oriented films. Any plans on making offbeat films rather then only action? That must be a challege for you, right?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:15 IST)
Raj: Well, I have already done Hameshaa and I do intend doing drama shortly.
Baba (Wed Apr 19 7:15 IST)
WHAT IS BINOD PRADHANS EARLIER WORK ?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:16 IST)
Baba: Parinda, 1942, for starters
RAJ (Wed Apr 19 7:16 IST)
What kind of drama Sanjay?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:18 IST)
Raj: Human stories, basically about ordinary guys in extraordinary situations that are not larger than life.
Mukta (Wed Apr 19 7:20 IST)
Sanjay, seems like Hameshaa was very close to you, but don't you think if you took more saleable hero, the movie may have clicked?
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:24 IST)
Mukta: When Hameshaa came out, that's what everbody told me. That had there been a more saleable hero in the place of Saif, the film would have done wonders at the box office. I guess it's hard luck, man. And, yes, it is one of the films that is closest to me.
Sanjay Gupta (Wed Apr 19 7:28 IST)
Hey, guys, time to leave now. I came in really apprehensive, thinking there would be no one out there to chat with me, especially after Khauff. But I can see that you guys haven't lost your hopes in me and that really encourages me to work really hard and live up to your expectations. Thank you so much. God bless.
