The Raj Singh Dungarpur Chat

Raj Singh Dungarpur RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:07:48 1996 )

Randy: I think at this point of time in comparative terms, we have quite a few promising opening bowlers not necessarily fast. Fast bowling is rythm and not strentgh. But specifically, I would like to complement the MRF space academy under the able guidance of Dennis Lillee.

Prem Panicker (Fri Oct 25 21:08:54 1996 )

Mog>> Let's keep this chat confined to cricket, please?

Mog!! (Fri Oct 25 21:09:38 1996 )

Hello? Any replies or how does it go? Clean bowled, but NOBALL announced?

SDS (Fri Oct 25 21:11:11 1996 )

Mr RSD>> Why is our public relations so bad? I notice that the Australian press, after the Delhi Test, blasted the Kotla wicket as a 'tailored' one though even Chappell admitted that it was a good Test wicket. We however do nothing to counter such negative propaganda. Shouldn't the board be concerned with the image of Indian cricket? Visitors complain of smog, traffic, bad food... and we take it all without a murmur!!!

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:11:19 1996 )

suprboy: I certainly feel that the condition of the pitches in India needs to be looked in. But the prerogative of producing a home wicket is always met with the demands of the home team. Since we are generally strong in our spin department, we end up producing wickets which help our spinners.

Randy (Fri Oct 25 21:12:23 1996 )

Well .... i think you guys will be here in Toronto i will demonstrate in front o millions watching if that what is needed to improve Indian cricket i wont rest from now enough is enough..

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:13:18 1996 )

SDS: Most visiting teams end up finding excuses. And it is not possible for the BCCI to respond to allegations which are not based on facts.

supRboy (Fri Oct 25 21:14:35 1996 )

Shri RSD, for international matches, I agree with your assessment that we should prepare pitches to our strength. What I meant was that we should do something for our upcoming fast bowlers...encourage them by developing bouncy pitches for domestic matches. Only then can we win tests abroad.

SDS (Fri Oct 25 21:15:07 1996 )

Mr RSD>> Why don't we think of playing an India A side in the international tournaments we host, like Australia used to do? That way the upcoming players can get experience of international level cricket. Would the Board consider this?

mog!! (Fri Oct 25 21:15:39 1996 )

Sir:I have a few friends from the cricket fraternity who also work for the IRS here. Do you feel the accounts of the WILLS CUP were absolutely above board? Yes or no, waffle not reqd...

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:18:10 1996 )

suprboy: Yes Pakistan has been encouraging their young talent. As and when we have found a young player, we have also done the same. Sachin is one such e.g. I believe young Sodhi is already in the squad of Punjab probables. And I am sure he will be picked up deservingly.

mog!! (Fri Oct 25 21:19:27 1996 )

No reply on WILLS CUP ACCOUNTS... No reply on connection between BINDRA and DALMIYA... No reply on connection between election to Cricket Board and funds from WWF...Tigers may live or die, cricket board opfficials go on forever...

Randy (Fri Oct 25 21:20:34 1996 )

Sir cricket Board make millions why dont they share some profit with players? iam sure if you were here in N america Board can not do this because playes have union!

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:20:46 1996 )

SDS: I am a firm believer of encouraging India 18 concept. And we have had to and fro visits on A team format. I would like to see more exchange at this level because it will provide an immediate feeding of the national teams requirments.

Murali (Fri Oct 25 21:20:50 1996 )

Rajji, This is about India & Pakistan. There seems to be bitter rivalry on the pitch, the crowds get heated, the whole atmosphere is tense.. but the reality is that both the team members are like that only on the field. Off the field, they are very friendly to each other..(I have seen that personally). This is a blessing, good sign, since both the countries are sore with each other politically. I think the press, media also have a role to play in raising the level of tension by their reports. I only wish these media persons understand that"pen is mightier than sword" and start defusing the sitiatuion. Maybe BCCi & BCCP should also hav a chat with the press and help both countries come together. Sports, I am told brings people, countries close, together !

Prem Panicker (Fri Oct 25 21:20:56 1996 )

Mog>> If I may butt in with a small suggestion here? The Wills World Cup accounts, and related matters, should ideally be asked of friend IS Bindra and Mr Dalmiya, both of whom are likely guests on Rediff Chat in the near future.

mog!! (Fri Oct 25 21:21:08 1996 )

.../ :(

supRboy (Fri Oct 25 21:22:51 1996 )

Shri RSD, Thanks!! I think this is a great idea (by Rediff) to have you talk to us live. Long live Indian cricket, and long live Rediff!!!

SDS (Fri Oct 25 21:23:16 1996 )

MrRSD, thanks for your responses. One last question: for your term as BCCI president, what would you say is your greatest goal, mission, ambition, whatever?

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:24:10 1996 )

Randy: Of course the BCCI is sharing it's profits with the players, you will be pleased to know that Indian playing in one day international at home ends up getting more than 100 thousand rupees per match. BCCI has also drawn up a programme to pay retire Ranji trophy players on the basis of number of matches they have played. And the total amount involved will be in crores of rupees. So BCCI is taking good care of present and past cricketers as well.

mog!! (Fri Oct 25 21:24:29 1996 )

Prem Panicker:This chat is with Mr RSD, Chairman BCCI as an office bearer and not as an individual. he shud respond to questions pertaining to his office, also, why shud I wait for his predecesor?Ofcourse if he doesn't want to answer, then what else is new? REDIFF:Please set some ground rules wherein such people don't answer only honey coated queries, their press handouts are sufficient for that...

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:25:47 1996 )

SMALL CORRECTION TO MY EARLIER REPLY: --------- Read as --- pleased to know that Indian players playing in oned day international---------------

Prem Panicker (Fri Oct 25 21:25:58 1996 )

SupRboy>> On behalf of REdiff, thanks for the encouragement. And this is not a one off, next on the list is MOHINDER AMARNATH, Live, on Rediff Chat on November 4. And lots more to come. :-)

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:26:04 1996 )

I WILL TAKE LAST TWO QUESTIONS.

supRboy (Fri Oct 25 21:26:54 1996 )

Shri RSD, I agree wholeheartedly with Shri. Murali's suggestion. The press is often to blame for inflamming passions. One of the finest examples of the comaraderie and good feeling that exists between the players of our countries (Ind and Pak) is javed miandad volunteering to give tips to our young bats. Also, Aquib Javed has said he has several close friends in the Indian team. I sincerely think we should get a regular 5-match test series going with Pakistan. After all, we are so close (geographically and historically).

Prem Panicker (Fri Oct 25 21:27:27 1996 )

Mog>> Frankly, I would hate to be asked why my predecessor as Sports Editor didn't pay enough attention to cricket on the site, or some such. My point being, how as an official do I give an official reply about a matter that is outside the purview of my tenure?

mog!! (Fri Oct 25 21:27:40 1996 )

Mr. Dungarpur, it looks like you have conceded tbhis match without evebn showing up on the pitch thoiugh you came out for the toss... please play Holland, UAE, Hong Kong and do not take on teams like us, don't bother, back to pavilion and good night..you guys ask your baboo/PA questions of RSD we are off to Palam...simple as that?

Prem Panicker (Fri Oct 25 21:28:25 1996 )

Mog>> Continuing, I am not suggesting that people stall - in that case, we don't need this chat. But then again, I was merely suggesting that questions, no matter how hard, be confined to the particular guest's own domain.

don (Fri Oct 25 21:28:51 1996 )

You say that we produce turning tracks because our strengths as in the spin department. But isn't it reality that we play ONLY a fraction of our matches on home turfs ? It would be incredibly myopic to pat ourselves on the back for winning on these turning tracks only to have our players (well at least most of them) look totally clueless when we play on fast tracks (the upcoming South African tour ring a bell ?) And to top it off, we seem to have the two best fast bowlers we have had in AGES in our team. I pity Srinath and Prasad who end up busting their behinds on these "sleeping beauties" and patiently wait to go on tour before they get to bowl on fair terms with the wickets they find out there. I just don't buy this by-now-cliched-ludicrous argument that we should continue to tailor our wickets to spin. Your comments ?

Indian (Fri Oct 25 21:29:16 1996 )

Mr. RSD, what does the selection team do to boost the morale of new and budding players. Include them in the squad, and then drop them without giving them any chance ??

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:29:51 1996 )

SDS: I have only one goal. To improve the standard of young Indian cricketers to an extent that they meet the demands of present day cricket, physically fit, mentally tough and cricketingly talented to apply themselves. To guide future Indian teams towards winning in both the formats test and limited overs of international cricket. I have no doubt in my mind that young Indian cricketer is a highly talented. It is the responsiblity of the BCCI to see that he blosoms at the inghest level. And this would be my endeavour.

Hotu (Fri Oct 25 21:30:09 1996 )

Good night Mr. Dungarpur, it was good to hear you. I had a question, but this is also something you might no want to comment on, therefore, I'll pass.

Prem Panicker (Fri Oct 25 21:31:11 1996 )

Hotu>> *smile* today you seem to have put in a marathon stint on REdiff, pal! A full one day game, and now this. Thanks for the company, see you Sunday.

Murali (Fri Oct 25 21:34:40 1996 )

Rajji, To add to SupRBoy, here in Singapore, we (Indians) play along with Pakistani's and play for the same team !!! We throughly enjoy playing with each other and respect each other..

RAJ SINGH DUNGARPUR (Fri Oct 25 21:34:40 1996 )

I THOUROUGHLY ENJOYED FACING YOUR BOUNCERS ON A BOUNCY WICKET. AND LOOK FORWARD TO MY SECOND INNINGS VERY SHORTLY. TILL THEN KEEP SUPPORTING INDIAN CRICKET AND I'M SURE WE WILL TURN THE CORNER. FOR ALL OF US TO ENJOY AND TAKE PRIDE INN THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS.

Murali, you live in S'pore? I hope to settle down there someday,

Murali (Fri Oct 25 21:39:28 1996 )

Still on India & pakistan, an "Kapil-Imran" trophy (as someone had suggested) is not a bad idea for say a 5 test series (in lines with the Ashes...)

ShaŽky (Fri Oct 25 21:40:07 1996 )

Hey, where is everyone from? Im from Bombay!

ShaŽky (Fri Oct 25 21:40:43 1996 )

don (Fri Oct 25 21:44:28 1996 )

Alive 'n kicking here in Toronto, Canada!

supRboy (Fri Oct 25 21:44:55 1996 )

Murali , I suggested it. :-)) Although I suppose it is the obvious choice of name.

(Fri Oct 25 21:47:31 1996 )

Mr. RSD I would like to make one request to you (As you have power to- implement it) I strongly suggest that new blood and any newcomers that you select, take them in confidence and give them enough time (what I mean is about 10 to 15 outings against couple of different teams), assure them that there place in team is not in danger if they don't perform right away. Let them play their natural game without being worried securing place in squad of 14. (I think Srinath, Prasad and Rahul are good example of it). I would appreciate your comments....

prashant@eng.umd.edu (Fri Oct 25 21:52:40 1996 )

Prashant.J.Kacharia: mr. RSD What are your views on making fast paced pitches to accclimatize batsmen with international conditions against international bowlers
